It’s time to review my empty products from Spring 2019. By the time I’ve finished something, I know exactly how I feel about it, so I prefer reviews of empties to first impressions. These are the items I finished during the spring of 2019. For items I neither love nor hate, I am always willing to try them again, but I will not seek them out. This generally means I will only try them again if they are: free, on sale, or in a set (sets are a great way to get a deal as long as the value of the items you want to try exceed the cost you are paying). Empties from my April and June Foil Challenge are not here, because I wanted to avoid redundancy. The pH of products I’ve tested this season are below. Visit the pH article for info on how I test and a list of everything I’ve tested.
I have two June 2019 Birchbox reviews, and I am placing both in this article. Once I learned of the price increase, I purchased two extra three month subscriptions. That way I could write this article comparing more new Birchbox offerings to the Allure Beauty Box. My three month subscriptions on my second and third boxes ended in May, so I expected to return to just my main box for June. When I wrote in to cancel Box two and three, Birchbox told me I still had one more left on subscription two. Considering I paid for the same term on the same day, I knew that was a mistake. If Birchbox wanted to send me a free box, I am not going to argue though. So, I paid for Box One, but I did not pay for Box Two. This is also the last time I will have Box Two.
It’s time for my March 2019 Sephora Play Box review. Play! by Sephora is a subscription box that offers five deluxe beauty samples and a bonus foil packet or perfume vial for $10 a month plus tax. Shipping is free. Only items sold at Sephora come inside the Play! box so most items are from well-known, high-end brands. While Sephora does carry a few low-end and luxury brands, they do not really appear in the subscription boxes. There is not a traditional rewards program with this box so you cannot get points for referring friends or writing reviews. It does award 10 Beauty Insider points to Beauty Insiders, 12.5 points to VIB members, and 15 points to VIB Rouge members. This Play! box also applies $10 toward your purchase minimum to maintain your Beauty Insider status. Visit my Sephora page for descriptions on points and status. The $10 charge processes immediately for new subscribers and from the 1st through the 4th for succeeding months. Boxes usually ship from the 11th through the 15th.
Want to know the pH of products? At the end of each season, I will conduct pH (Potential Hydrogen) tests on all empty products that still have liquid in them and compile a master list here. The pH of each product will also appear behind the review of each empty article the product appears in. Type the product name into the search bar to find the corresponding article for the review. It is possible I will occasionally test products that are not yet empty. Place your testing request in the comments. I will test it if it is a product I own, and it is already opened. Opening and/or purchasing a product just to test it is not something I will usually do, because the expiration countdown starts the moment the product opens.

You’ve banked a lot of points at Birchbox. What should you spend them on? There are thousands of great items in the store. If you’re a subscriber, you’ve probably even sampled some gems you could buy. I like to use my points to purchase more boxes. The Limited edition boxes, in particular. The Gym Bag Heroes Limited Edition Box is perfect for me. New gear for my workouts is great, although I look forward to trying most of the beauty products as well.

One of my favorite deals is through Birchbox. For $10 a month, it sends a minimum of five beauty samples. The brand revamped over the summer of 2014. Now, it allows you to choose one of your samples from a selection of 3-4 items. You can also choose a specially curated box and know all of your items in advance if the box appeals to you. The selection is usually near the end of the month. Aces (people who earn over 500 points a year) and people who refer friends get to select their items a day earlier than everyone else. Select as early as you can, because Birchbox does run out of choices.
Birchbox will usually do a sneak peek video ahead of selections, and it is a good idea to watch the videos. There are usually 2-4 upgrade options each month. The items are offered at a slight discount. They ship with your regular box and will be charged when they ship. These items sell out quickly, so reserve them as soon as you see the sneak peek video. If you wait to upgrade your box until you do your sample selection, there will probably be no upgrade options left.
For those who love to be surprised, you can let them pick all of the items for you. If you fill out a detailed beauty profile about yourself, you have a better chance of getting items suited toward you. Of all the different boxes I’ve subscribed to, this box utilizes your beauty profile to send items most closely matched to your desires. Most months, I find at least 3 of the 5 items excite me. Thus, this is a great deal for me. Ever since the revamp, food items, lifestyle items and foils are bonuses and do not deduct a beauty item from your box. Added bonus! As you can see from my last year of boxes, they send quality items. The newer boxes keep getting better, too. My first was my least favorite.
My favorite thing about this membership is the site gives you 10 points for each review. With 5-7 samples a month, you can earn up to 70 points. At 100 points, you can cash them in and spend $10 on anything you want in the Birchbox shop. Even if you have 2 months in a row with only five items, you should be earning $10 every 2 months just for reviews. You also get 1 point for every $1 you spend in the shop. They even run occasional bonus point promos, so it is very easy to earn points. New subscribers can usually find codes to get 50-100 bonus points added to their account.
If you want to subscribe, remember to look at start-up offers and all available offers. When you’re ready to spend your rewards points, remember to add your free two piece sample pack when spending $35 from the Bonus Shop.
