Birchbox August 2019 Review of Swap For Full Size Plus Subscription Box Offers

My August 2019 Birchbox review is ready. Birchbox subscriptions get customized to your beauty profile. All boxes are a mixture of haircare, makeup, and skincare. There are times when body care items pop up, and you can select an option to receive no more than 6 fragrance vials a year in your profile. You could get a box with 2 haircare items, 2 makeup items, and 1 skincare item or any similar variety, but you will rarely see more than 2 items from any category unless the third is a foil. If you are looking for a box that is mostly makeup or mostly skincare, this is not it. Those looking for a well-rounded sample box may enjoy this subscription.

Annual Birchbox Review

This is my August 2019 Birchbox review, but you can see a synopsis of a year of Sephora Play Box reviews vs a year of Birchbox reviews. Every year, I review my $10 boxes (for me at least) against each other, so I can declare the annual winner. This is also helpful for those who would like to see a year of reviews for either box in one place. Birchbox did raise its prices for select members, but it is still $10 for me. For those who are not ACES on the $10 plan, I will consider that when I do the annual comparison for 2019.

About the Birchbox Subscription

The $10-$15 charge processes immediately for new subscribers and on the 1st in succeeding months. Boxes usually ship from the 8th through the 12th. At the end of every month (actual date varies), Birchbox will email an option to select a sample (from a choice of 3-5 items), or the featured box where you know all samples up front. Those who respond to that email can also opt out of one type of sample. If you want a sample choice and the featured box, I suggest making a choice and purchasing the featured box separately. Subscribers can review 5 samples for 10 points each once during the lifetime of the account. Those who pay full-price for their subscriptions up front get points to use toward shop purchases. People who use a discount code on up front subscriptions will not get points. No one on a month-to-month plan gets points for the subscription either. The amount spent for the subscription goes toward the $300 annual minimum to achieve Aces status.

August 2019 Birchbox Theme

Birchbox makes a custom box design for each month. I would pick the full size product shipped in an outer box on the month they are doing throwbacks. Members can get a box design from any month in the past. The Rifle Paper ones are my favorite. It would have been nice to have a shot at another.

The first thing you normally see when you open a Birchbox is a product card. This was the first time it was a piece of paper. It wants us to turn it into a fortune teller paper, so I am guessing the cardboard will return next month.

The back of the card goes over the theme, Old-School Summertime. This might have been fun in the July Box. Since my kids started school this week, I do not want to dream about summer vacations. It’s hard to believe there is still more than a month of summer left. Someone forgot to tell the school.

Contents are loose inside the box with a single piece of black foam at the bottom and a single sheet of tissue paper encircling the items. The tissue does seem to help the items from moving around a lot.

There was also a subscriber’s only coupon offer inside the box. If you arrive after the expiration date and need a code, check this article.

August 2019 Birchbox Sample Choices

The three items to choose from were: amika Bushwick Beach No-Salt Wave SprayPūrlisse Watermelon Energizing Sheet Mask, or ModelCo LIP PLUMPER Hydra Lip Therapy. There were three options for the curated boxes.

Curated Box 1- Test the Water, includes: R+Co HIGH DIVE Moisture + Shine CrèmeIBY Beauty BlushSmashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Primer Water, Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips, and too cool for school Coconut Oil Serum Eye Patch.

Curated Box 2- Back to Business, includes: Vasanti® BrightenUp!® Enzymatic Face RejuvenatorARROW BOOST Color Enhancing Lip Balm Berry Busy, MAC Cosmetics In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash Mascara, air repair Complexion-Boosting Moisturizer, and Oribe Grandiose Hair Plumping Mousse.

Curated Box 3- Summer Hits, includesLipstick Queen Dating Game LipstickCOOLA® Dawn Patrol™ Classic Primer SPF 30Lise Watier Intense Waterproof EyelinerJuliette Has a Gun Vanilla VibesIllamasqua Gel Sculpt Silhouette, and Living proof.® Perfect hair Day™ (PhD) 5-in-1 Styling Treatment.

Subscribers can always purchase these featured boxes separately for $15 if they want that and another option. Everyone can purchase a curated box for $20.

There was also an option to Swap Your Box For a Full-Size 8oz Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle.

Some members were given the option to swap the box for Birchbox Loyalty points. I get 1.3 points per dollar as an Ace, so I would never pay $10 for 100 points. That is equivalent of 1 point per dollar.

My choice was the swap for full-size option.

My August 2019 Birchbox Subscription Review

My box was 65871096. Because I swapped for a full-size product, my box only has one item. Prior to my July 2019 Birchbox, every box I’ve received since the April relaunch had at least one full-size product in it. That means forfeiting the other five items was a risk. The main reason I decided to go for it is that I already know and love the full-size product. With tangle prone hair, I need a lot of leave-in conditioner.

The 8oz Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle retails for $23.50. I love the way this smells, but most importantly, it really helps detangle my hair. It also makes it a little softer and less frizzy than usual.

Was my August 2019 Birchbox worth it?

The August 2019 Birchbox has a $23.50 value. That brings the value for the average box in 2019 to $42.24. Had I selected a box I am almost certain this would have a higher starting value driving up the average box value for the year. I am happy with my selection and have no regrets. This particular full-size product is 8x the sample size Sephora sent me in the past. It will last me a long time. Paying $10 for a $23.50 product is over 50% off. With an amazing deal like that, I just hope Birchbox can sustain it. Let’s see which full size products it offers in place of the box next. If they are good ones, I will be all over that deal.

My personal value is $23.50, because I am keeping this. If I have any samples left, I might be willing to part with those. Thus is all mine though.

July 2019 Birchbox Theme

Birchbox makes a custom box design for each month. The lemon and orange design does give me summer vibes.

The first thing you normally see when you open a Birchbox is a product card.

The back of the card goes over the theme, love, you. It mentions that self care is different for everyone, and it is important for all. It wants us to get over what we’re self conscious about and embrace them.

Contents are loose inside the box with a single piece of black foam at the bottom and a single sheet of tissue paper encircling the items. The tissue does seem to help the items from moving around a lot.

July 2019 Birchbox Sample Choices

Everyone else can purchase a featured box for $20. There was also an option to Swap Your Box For a Full-Size Set Love of Color Luminous Lia Shine Trio in Glow, Beam, and Glisten.

Some members were given the option to swap the box for Birchbox Loyalty points. I get 1.3 points per dollar as an Ace, so I would never pay $10 for 100 points. That is equivalent of 1 point per dollar.

My choice was the MAC Lipglass.

My July 2019 Birchbox Subscription Review

My July 2019 Birchbox review is from box version 65403394. It has 2 skincare products, two makeup products, one hair product, and one makeup-skincare hybrid.

The 0.08oz MAC Cosmetics Lipglass Prrr is worth $14. I prefer other formulas over this one, because it is a little sticky. It is not too sticky though, so I do not mind it.

This pinky-peach color is nice. It will look great this summer.

The 0.5oz Georgette Klinger Volcanic Mineral Scrub is worth $3.57. This seems interesting. I’ve never used an ash scrub.

The Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch Invisible+ set of 6 is worth $2.77. I still get acne, so I like having these patches on hand. I’ve purchased these in the past. My nieces and nephews stole most of them, but I did like it. There is a brand I like more than this one, but I will use these (if they’re not stolen from me).

The 0.1oz Clarins Wonder Perfect Mascara 4D is worth $14. This is a mascara I have not tried yet, so I will probably hold onto it. My Sephora Box preview showed this but then it changed. Glad I got one anyway.

The 0.16oz Dr. Jart+ V7™ Priming Moisturizer is worth $4.54. I’ve been getting into priming moisturizers, because I find them even more hydrating than a hydrating primer. My skin can always use the extra boost. This is one I have not tried yet.

The 0.85oz Alterna CAVIAR Anti-Aging Restructuring Bond Repair Leave-In Heat Protection Spray is worth $6.48. This is a product I’ve wanted to try. It made me really happy to see it.

Was my July 2019 Birchbox worth it?

The July 2019 Birchbox has a $45.36 value. That brings the value for the average box in 2019 to $46.33. This is the first box since the price increase in April that does not have any full-size products. It also slightly brought down the average value for the year. I wish the trend with full-size products would have continued, because one extra sample is not enough to justify the price increase. There was also a curated box with only five products even though we are now promised six. That makes me wonder if there were any random boxes with less than six items.

My personal value is $45.36, because I will probably keep everything in the box. That makes it a successful box for me. A six for six hit on products I want to try does not happen often. Only one item of the six is a repeat to my collection. Because that is an item I like, I never mind getting more of it. There is nothing overly exciting in here other than the hair product, but I am still happy with this box.

Birchbox June 2019 Review of Curated Box Making Waves and a Sample Choice Plus Subscription Box Offers

I have two June 2019 Birchbox reviews, and I am placing both in this article. Once I learned of the price increase, I purchased two extra three month subscriptions. That way I could write this article comparing more new Birchbox offerings to the Allure Beauty Box. My three month subscriptions on my second and third boxes ended in May, so I expected to return to just my main box for June. When I wrote in to cancel Box two and three, Birchbox told me I still had one more left on subscription two. Considering I paid for the same term on the same day, I knew that was a mistake. If Birchbox wanted to send me a free box, I am not going to argue though. So, I paid for Box One, but I did not pay for Box Two. This is also the last time I will have Box Two.

Is Birchbox Really Worth Up to $15 – My Direct Comparison Between the New and Old Boxes and Its Newest Competitor, the Allure Beauty Box

When Birchbox moved to its new tiered pricing structure on March 25 of 2019, it went into direct competition with the Allure Beauty Box. New month-to-month subscribers could choose to spend $15 with Allure Beauty Box or $15 with Birchbox. With the price increase Birchbox promised an extra sample, better brands, more choices, faster shipping, and more. I’m here to review my experience from before the change and since to change to let you know if it is worth it at $15 or if you should spend your $15 with Allure Beauty Box instead. Of course, you can always stick with a $10 box from Ipsy or Sephora Play (while you can, because these could also get increased).

Birchbox May 2019 Review of Curated Box 2, The Skincare Made Easy Kit, and a Sample Choice Plus Subscription Box Offers

I have three May 2019 Birchbox reviews, and I am placing all three in this article. After I learned about the new Birchbox pricing structure, I decided to purchase two more subscriptions before the price went up. Since I wanted to see if the new boxes are really better than the old boxes, I wanted to have a few each month for comparison. It is easy to get one lucky box. If you get three out of three, it is far more likely actual improvement is taking place. In typical studies, you usually need a sample size of at least 30. As much as I love experiments and blogging, I was not ordering 30 boxes!

Birchbox March 2019 Review Take Two and Subscription Box Offers

I’ve already covered my March 2019 Birchbox review and the March 2019 curated Birchbox I purchased separately. Yet, here I am to provide two more Birchbox March 2019 reviews. Why? When March 24th rolled around, I decided to purchase two more subscriptions on the last day I could get them for $10 each per month. Since I wanted to see if the new boxes are really better than the old boxes, I wanted to have a few each month for comparison. It is easy to get one lucky box. Birchbox Introduced A New Tier Pricing Structure – Members Will Now Pay $10, $12, $12.50, $13, $14, or $15 Based on Their Status and Plan – How Does This Increase Affect You?

Birchbox announced a new tier pricing structure, which effectively means it raised the price on most members. Only select members will get the $10 pricing it launched with. What added benefits are we getting for the price increase? When Birchbox launched in September 2010, and it was a pioneer in the beauty subscription box industry. Members could get a box of 4-5 beauty products to sample for $10 a month. The concept was simple. Let users get samples stress free. There was no need to go into a store to ask for things, because Birchbox tailored the samples to the user’s profile. A subscription box revolution emerged in the years that followed, because many saw the success Birchbox had and wanted to capitalize while the market was still hot. While Birchbox only sold 12 products when it launched, the intent was always to encourage customers to purchase the full-size of the samples they fell in love with. It wanted to build its subscription program, so it could grow its online store.

Birchbox March 2019 Curated Box Review and Subscription Box Offers

I’ve already reviewed my March 2019 Birchbox subscription, but I decided to purchase a featured box separately. This is my review on the March 2019 curated box. Anyone can purchase this curated box for $15, but subscribers can purchase it for $10. It will automatically discount the charge from $15 to $10 once you add it to your cart on an account with an active subscription. That is the cost of our regular subscription, so I recommend this when you want the featured box and a sample choice. Birchbox gives at least 5 deluxe beauty samples each month for $10, but there are 6 in the curated 2019 March Birchbox. See my March 2019 subscription review to view my sample choice and the other items I got with it.

Those still on the fence can read my comparison of all my 2018 Sephora Play Boxes against all my 2018 Birchboxes. Anyone looking for deals on shop purchases should keep reading. Birchbox releases a lot of promotions each year, and I usually only add ones that stick around for a while to my Birchbox Deals Page. Birchbox 2019 Subscription Welcome Gift Promo Code Offers

Birchbox always has a promo code for a welcome gift for anyone signing up for a new subscription. Different welcome gifts are available based on the subscription duration you select. Those who select a one-month subscription will usually get a single sample, but there are times when the offer is a full-size item. That is part of the reason I’ve decided to start tracking offers. Those who are on the fence can use this as a guide to see what the current offer is and compare it to past offers to see if they should subscribe now or wait for a better offer. Since startup offers are always available, they are a part of the deal. You get better gifts for selecting a 3-month subscription, a 6-month subscription, or a 12-month subscription. In 2018, Birchbox switched its referral links to only offer 3, 6, and 12 month subscriptions. I dislike that.

Sephora Play vs Birchbox: A Year of Reviews – The Battle of the $10 Subscription Boxes – Which One is Better?

When it comes to Sephora Play versus Birchbox comparisons, I feel a month-to-month match up is too short. To really get a feel for which is better, I’ve compared every box I received from Sephora Play in 2018 to every box I’ve received from Birchbox in 2018. That is 12 monthly battles in one article. I’ve been subscribed to Birchbox since February of 2014 and Sephora Play since the national launch in May 2016 without any breaks for either. Those subscriptions have provided me with a lot of mini samples that I paid $2 each for ($10 box divided by 5 deluxe samples). Every month, I review Birchbox and Sephora Play separately (click those links to see the reviews). Detailed, dedicated articles are usually more helpful, so I will continue to separate their monthly reviews. After each year wraps, I write a comparison article to go over the products and values for each box picking the one I like the best each month. I will also go over the average value of the 12 boxes for the year, and other important information. My goal with this is to give a comprehensive review for those who are looking to subscribe to only one or the other. While I will give my opinion, look at the boxes and the information I provide to decide which is best for you.

The Best 2018 Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday Beauty Sales and Deals

My favorite shopping event of the year is finally here. This weekend, which kicks before Thanksgiving with some retailers, provides some of the best deals we will see. Traditionally, this is the weekend where most retailers cross over from red to black, and they will do whatever it takes to earn your shopping dollars. Offers are competitive, because almost every retailer will have one. I will update this every time I see an incredible offer through Cyber Monday, so this list will grow over the week. My tastes might vary from yours, so make sure you sign up for emails from all of your favorite retailers. It is also a good idea to check multiple blogs and sites to see what each of them feel is worth mentioning this season. Most of these offers go out to all customers. Of course, there might be some affiliate exclusives or offers targeted to select customers. I am not listing any small offers, because this is the time of year when we can stretch our budget further by scoring just the right deal. Some big offers will not make the cut either, because I cannot list them all.

I used the $10 Birchbox awarded to Aces from Customer Appreciation Day to purchase the featured box for September. Subscribers can always receive the featured box in place of a surprise box for their subscription or purchase the featured box for $10 if they want it in addition to whatever box they receive. It discounts automatically after you’ve logged into an account with an active subscription. Everyone else can purchase the featured box for $15. Because I used my $10 automatic credit on the 13th, I got this box for free. As this was not my September Subscription Box, I will review this in a different way than I do with my subscription boxes. Before I even saw the offer for $10, I was already considering buying this box. In other words, this is how I chose to let Birchbox appreciate me.

Birchbox September 2018 Subscription Box Review and Your Customer Appreciation Day Reminder

Today is Customer Appreciation Day, CAD. See my Customer Appreciation Day article to see what’s happening.

I’ve been a Birchbox subscriber since February of 2014 and over 4 and a half years later, I am still happy. There have been a lot of changes over the years, but I continue to receive new things to try. Some of my favorite beauty products, which I’ve touched upon many times, are things I found in my Birchboxes that I probably never would have purchased otherwise. My September Box, from the original subscription box celebrating eight years, is another hit. All five items are new to me, and four of the five are products I am happy to try. As I’ve said many times over the years, even the ones that do not excite you upon arrival can surprise you once you try them. Thus, I would rather have a box of new items, which bring new possibilities than a box of products I’ve tried before and find okay. Granted, I always like getting duplicates of products I love, and I try to grab Real Chemistry Peels from Birchbox as often as possible. I love when it is a sample choice, because I can always use more.

Birchbox August 2018 Featured Subscription Box Review

Birchbox gives at least 5 deluxe beauty samples each month for $10. Some boxes have more than 5, but anything over 5 is usually a foil. Boxes get customized to your beauty profile, and you can opt out of one type of sample per box during sample choice.

The $10 charge processes immediately for new subscribers and on the 1st in succeeding months. Boxes usually ship from the 8th through the 12th. At the end of every month (actual date varies), Birchbox will email an option to select a sample (from a choice of 3-5 items), or the featured box where you know all samples up front. Those who respond to that email can also opt out of one type of sample. If you want a sample choice and the featured box, read this article. Subscribers can review 5 samples for 10 points each once during the lifetime of the account. Those who pay subscriptions up front get points to use toward shop purchases. Anyone with a month-to-month plan does not get points for the subscription, but the amount spent will go toward the $300 annual minimum to achieve Aces status.

Birchbox Subscribers Get a $5 Discount When Buying a Curated Box From The Shop

Sample choice for Birchbox subscriptions this month was really tough. This was the first month in a long time where I would have been happy with any choice or the curated box. Anytime I see the Real Chemistry 3-minute Luminous Peel as a sample choice for Birchbox, I have to grab it. That is one of the best products I’ve ever discovered in any subscription box. It will be 50% off at Ulta during the Love Your Skin Event on the 24th, and I am planning on getting one there as well. I actually ended up with all three sample choices in my regular box so I got really lucky. Once I fulfilled my Real Chemistry fix, I needed to get my hands on the curated box.
