It’s time for the worst in Beauty for 2018. Few things suck worse than spending hard-earned money on an awful product. Whether low-end, mid-range, high-end, or luxury, any money spent is a bad deal when the product is terrible. I really could call this article the 10 Worst Beauty Deals of 2018. The more you spend the more disappointed you are when there is no return on your investment. It is also the reason we are more forgiving when drugstore products let us down but feel more disappointed when a high-end product is a bust. This is why high-end and luxury products make these lists more than drugstore items. Some are just not a fit, but others are universally bad. Okay, nothing is universally good or bad, but some products come close. Of all the products I tried this year, I selected my ten least favorite. I limited the list to products I tried for the first time this year. Deal shoppers do not always try things the moment they release, so these things did not all launch in 2018.
Maybe I should have titled this article, The Two Times I Got Orange Hair Courtesy of PINCHme and Clairol nice n’ easy. I am the type of person who will sometimes give things (and people) a second chance even when they’ve proven they do not deserve it. That happened with this hair color. After the one I mentioned in my free samples article failed, I convinced myself that I owed it to the brand to try it again before writing my review. That one was a different color, Medium Ash Blonde 8A, and maybe this color would not be as bad. It could have been user error, I told myself. Yes, I victim blamed. My Spring 2018 Walmart Beauty Box had a coupon for another free box of nice ‘n easy. Thankfully, I forgot about it, and the coupon expired before I could redeem it.
It’s been a long time since I’ve shared completely free samples I’ve received. These are not items I got for free as a GWP, although you may know how much I love those. They are free products I received without any purchase or (in many cases) no promise to review the item. Most freebies in this type of article have nothing to do with my blog either. Since my last volume, I’ve received a lot more than I am about to share, but I did not put any other items aside for the article. Now that I have returned to actively blogging, I will put all freebies aside and post the next volume when I have at least a few items to share. When a free sampling site that requires a review or someone sends me something for consideration, I usually dedicate an article to it. Part of the reason I decided to write this now instead of waiting for more products is I want to use them.
Target releases seasonal beauty boxes. These are not subscription boxes and almost always sell out the day they release, usually in the first few hours. There is a limit of one box (of each type) per order. One new box released today and is still available. Shipping is always free, and the box contents announce as soon as the box goes on sale. Most items are sample sized, but there is almost always a full-size item or two inside. Value is usually at least triple the cost. The only variation in box content is on color items. Box contents appear online once they become available, which decreases the likelihood of buyer’s remorse. Items inside a box only tend to vary in color meaning your only surprise will be in the color you get. Most items inside the box are full-sized, and it is not unusual that one item exceeds the cost of the entire box if you were to buy it separately. I like that they usually release more than one box at a time giving you a choice or the possibility to get multiples. Men are not left out either, because they sometimes get a box of their own.
When Target advertised the Hello Sunshine, I was excited to see the hair and teeth items. Other items were all bonuses. The limited edition boxes are first come, first served, which is the only drawback on the lack of subscription. You have to act quickly when the boxes come out, because it is not uncommon for them to sell out quickly. I ordered it right away, because it was only $7. It is hard not to find $7 in value. This box sold out before I even got my shipping notification. That means waiting to see what comes in everyone’s box is not an effective strategy on obtaining one.
