Sephora Play! January 2020 Review – Stress-Free Beauty

By Kimberly

It’s time for my Sephora Play January 2020 Review. Play! by Sephora is a subscription box that offers five deluxe beauty samples and a bonus foil packet or perfume vial for $10 a month plus tax. Shipping is free. Only items sold at Sephora come inside the Play! Box so most items are from well-known, high-end brands. While Sephora does carry a few low-end and luxury brands, they do not really appear in the subscription boxes.

Sephora Play! Frequently Asked Questions

Are There Any Promo or Coupon Codes For The Play! by Sephora Subscription?

No, Sephora has never offered any promo or coupon codes for joining Sephora Play! It does at time sell Play! boxes without a subscription for $10 or less than $10 directly through the site. Even when that happens, you will not need a promo code. Just check the sale section.

When Do I Get Charged For The Play! by Sephora Subscription?

The $10 charge processes immediately for new subscribers and from the 1st through the 4th for succeeding months.

When Do the Boxes Ship For The Play! by Sephora Subscription?

Sephora Play Boxes usually ship from the 11th through the 15th.

Do I Get Rewards Points For the Play! by Sephora Subscription?

There is not a traditional rewards program with this box so you cannot get points for referring friends or writing reviews. Sephora does award 10 Beauty Insider points to Beauty Insiders, 12.5 points to VIB members, and 15 points to VIB Rouge members. The Sephora Play! box also applies $10 toward your purchase minimum to maintain your Beauty Insider status. Visit my Sephora page for descriptions on points and status.

Can I See What I Got In a past Play! by Sephora Subscription Box?

This is helpful if you liked something but cannot remember what it was. You can view contents on one box at a time accessing the links through your Sephora order history. There are times when I can see all my Sephora history from that link and other times where it cuts older orders off. The past boxes link does give complete details on the last six boxes.

Can I See What I am Getting in My Next Play! by Sephora Subscription Box?

I find that the items will get listed in the account around the 15th. Some people call or search the Internet for spoilers before that. Others are even lucky enough to get their boxes before that. By the 16th, everyone who wants to know generally can.

How Can I Get Better Play! by Sephora Boxes?

If other people are getting boxes that you want, it might be time to tweak your Play! Profile if you aren’t ready to throw in the towel.

How Do I Update My Sephora Play! Profile?

Make sure you update your Sephora Play! Profile, because it does not use the Sephora profile for this box. You can continue to play with your settings until you are happy with what you’re receiving. If no adjustments help, cancel your subscription. You can view samples that were available this month through shop the products link.

Which is Better Play! by Sephora or Birchbox?

This article covers my Play by Sephora January 2020 Box Review, but you can see a synopsis of a year of Play! by Sephora Box reviews vs a year of Birchbox reviews. Every year, I review my $10 boxes against each other, so I can declare the annual winner. This is also helpful for those who would like to see a year of reviews for either box in one place. Birchbox did raise its prices for select members, but it is still $10 for me. I did consider the raised prices in the 2019 review.

Sephora Play January 2020 Box Theme

Each box comes with a Sephora Play! Book. This is a booklet that unfolds into a large sheet of photo paper to show info about all the items inside the box.

It also goes over the theme for the box and shows how the products tie into the theme. The theme for January Sephora Play box is Stress-Free Beauty.

Items come inside a thick ziplock bag. You can reuse these bags. The colors keep changing, so I have a rainbow.

My Sephora Play Box January 2020 Review

I received two skincare products, two makeup products, one makeup/skincare hybrid, and one perfume. My Sephora Play January 2020 is box version is 2299147, Box C.

The 0.03oz Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel is worth $7.20. This is a product I already know and love in my perfect shade. Even though it is a dupe, I am definitely keeping it. I love the way it adds fullness through fibers to my hair and keeps them in place.

The 0.007oz Kat Von D Tattoo Liner Trooper Black is worth $7.37. This is another product I know and love. I already have a lot of these, so I am unsure if I will keep it yet. It does a pretty good job of staying put once it sets and it is relatively easy to apply. If it had thinner precision to help me get closer to the lash line, I would use it more.

The 0.5oz GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD® Charcoal Instant Treatment Mask retails in this size for $25. It seriously shocked me that Sephora sent this size. I love this mask so much, so I am thrilled. Most of the samples are still micro sized, but this is the second month in a row with a $25 item in a Play box. Can we go for three? This mask pulls everything out of my face, leaves it feeling super clean and soft.

The 0.18oz Shiseido WASO: Clear Mega-Hydrating Moisturizer is worth $3.80. I was not super excited when I got this in the October 2019 Play Box. Three months later, I am even less excited to see it repeated so soon. Gel moisturizers are not my thing. If I try the first one, it will be in warmer weather. By then, I will have given this second one away.

The 0.25oz smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer is worth $9.15. I tried this years ago and it gave me a rash. Even after trying a couple more variations of it, I got a rash. There has to be something in it I am allergic to.

The 0.04 Viktor&Rolf Magic Sage Spell is worth $2.32. Earthy and woody are not usually notes I would go for, but I will give this a try. The key notes of Lavender Essence and Citrus Caviar Accord sound a little more appealing.

Was the Sephora Play January 2020 Box Worth It?

The Sephora Play Box January 2020 has a $54.84 value. This brings the average box value for the year to $54.84. My personal value is likely $41.89, because I will not keep the duplicate moisturizer or primer. Only the perfume is new, which I will definitely try. Though I love the brow gel, the liner, and the mask, I have so many liners. If I do not keep the duplicate liner, my personal value might dip. Even if it does, it is still over the $10 I paid. This was easily worth it. While I would have preferred some of the new items that were advertised, I am at least grateful Sephora sent me a few that I love, including a very generous size of the Supermud., Inc.

I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (12 and 7) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 12-year-old to apply it.

Deal or No Deal? What Do You Think?
