Birchbox The Heat Protection Hair Kit Review

By Kimberly

My Birchbox The Heat Protection Hair Kit Review is ready. I purchased this when it was 50% off, and it is currently only 20% off. While I wish I could have gotten this up when it was still 50% off, I figure Birchbox will eventually lower it again. Birchbox puts out a lot of high-quality Discovery Kits. These are smaller versions of the Limited Edition Boxes and typically come in a clear TSA approved travel bag. A discovery kit is a themed bag with multiple brands curated by Birchbox. Some discovery kits, particularly the ones with all samples, are not worth purchasing. Of course, I usually buy them for hard to get items I really want to try or already love. As long as the value of the items I am keeping exceeds the amount I am paying, I will usually purchase the kit. Others are more than worth it.

It is even possible to find low-price discovery kits with full-size products where those products more than cover the cost of the bag. I like to check the section out periodically, because Birchbox does not always send emails when new kits get released the way it does for Limited Edition Boxes.

Like all Birchboxes, there is a product card that goes over the contents. The card always lists the price to purchase the full-size so you know what you’re getting yourself into before you try the sample.

The theme or name of the set is on the back of the card. This set is Birchbox The Heat Protection Hair Kit. It is a 8-piece set that retails for $25. Every item inside is for the hair, more specifically for heat protection. There are seven samples and on full size item in this kit. That makes the cost of each item $3.13.

The 2oz amika The Kure Repair Shampoo is worth $4.40. My hair gets really dry, so I want to try this shampoo. It claims to cleanse and reverse damage.

The 2oz amika The Kure Repair Conditioner is worth $5.21. I think this will pair well with the shampoo. Moisture with soft, shiny hair is exactly what I want.

The full-size 1.69oz davines The Wake-Up Circle Recovery Hair Mask retails for $10 (Amazon price may vary. Birchbox no longer carries this. I love the idea of a mask that targets the scalp. This was the main reason I wanted this kit. My scalp needs a lot of extra care in the winter.

The 2oz AQUIS Prime Restorative Leave-In Conditioner is worth $6.50. My hair tangles easily, so I need a good leave-in conditioner. It always concerns me when I read that it is lightweight, because that usually means it will not be strong enough. I will try it though. If it leaves my hair with moisture and frizz-free as promised, I can overlook some tangles.

The 2oz Bumble and bumble. Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer is worth $6.59. I really hate the shampoo and conditioner from this line and I am indifferent to the oil. While my expectations are not overly high, I will go in with an open mind. This one does seem more foolproof than the others, so I cannot see myself hating it.

The 1.45oz Number 4 Jour d’automne Thermal Styling Spray is worth $4.48. I’ve been using heat styling a little more now that it is cold outside. This is one I did not already own, so I will try it.

The 0.5oz Oribe Balm d’Or Heat Styling Shield is worth $6.32. I still have not tried this heat styler despite having many samples. Given how much I love every Oribe product I’ve tried, there is a good chance I will keep this duplicate.

The 0.85oz Alterna CAVIAR Anti-Aging Smoothing Anti-Frizz Blowout Butter is worth $5.67. Frizz is one of the biggest issues I deal with, so I hope this works.

Birchbox December 2019 Mystery Sample Pack Items

Whenever you spend over $35, you can add a free 2-piece sample pack to your cart. This combines with any promo code, because you add it directly to your cart. Birchbox sells this for $10 for anyone spending less than $35. It is rare to get one with over $10 in value. I highly discourage anyone spending less than $35 from buying it. My samples were: a Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm ($3.30), and a Love of Color Sharpener ($5).

For this order, I used MRRIGHT for a full-size, Lipstick Queen Dating Game Mr. Right.

This gift was for Aces only and had a $35 minimum. I purchased another kit with this one to get it, which I already reviewed separately.

This is a shade I considered purchasing but never did, so getting a free $24 lipstick is cool.

This bright, warm, rosy-pink shade with hints of coral is quite lovely. It will be a lovely color for spring or summer.

Is the Birchbox The Heat Protection Hair Kit Worth It?

This bag has a $49.17 value, which is significantly under the $85 Birchbox estimates. There is no excuse for Birchbox to be off by over $35, because a clear plastic bag is not worth that much. That alone already turns me off, but I did not run the numbers until after I received the bag. The only full-size item in this set really is a glorified sample size sold as a full-size considering all the samples have real packaging and it comes in a foil. Most of the items inside interest me, so I am not disappointed in my purchase at $12.50. I would have been disappointed at $25. Though I am going to try some I am not overly excited about, I could have just have easily gifted them away. My personal value is 42.85, if I keep all the new items.

I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (13 and 8) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 13-year-old to apply it.
