Birchbox The Hair Detox Kit 2.0 Review
By Kimberly
My Birchbox The Hair Detox Kit 2.0 Review is ready. I purchased this when it was 50% off, and it is currently only 20% off. While I wish I could have gotten this up when it was still 50% off, I figure Birchbox will eventually lower it again. Birchbox puts out a lot of high-quality Discovery Kits. These are smaller versions of the Limited Edition Boxes and typically come in a clear TSA approved travel bag. A discovery kit is a themed bag with multiple brands curated by Birchbox. Some discovery kits, particularly the ones with all samples, are not worth purchasing. Of course, I usually buy them for hard to get items I really want to try or already love. As long as the value of the items I am keeping exceeds the amount I am paying, I will usually purchase the kit. Others are more than worth it.
It is even possible to find low-price discovery kits with full-size products where those products more than cover the cost of the bag. I like to check the section out periodically, because Birchbox does not always send emails when new kits get released the way it does for Limited Edition Boxes.
Like all Birchboxes, there is a product card that goes over the contents. The card always lists the price to purchase the full-size so you know what you’re getting yourself into before you try the sample.
The theme or name of the set is on the back of the card. This set is Birchbox The Hair Detox Kit 2.0. It is a 10-piece set that retails for $45. Every item inside is for the hair, more specifically the scalp. There are two full-size items in this set and eight samples. That makes the cost of each item $4.50.
The 2.7oz Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt is worth $17.18. I have a love/hate relationship with this. It cleanses my hair while it scrubs it. Everything smells and feels great when I use this. My main goal is to deeply cleanse the scalp when I use a product like this, and this does it without being overly abrasive. Whenever I used this, I noticed a lot more of my hair fell out than usually does with anything else though. If the same thing happens after I try this sample, I will know for sure this product pulls more hair from my head.
The full-size 4.2oz Oribe Serene Scalp Exfoliating Scrub retails for $52. This is the reason I wanted the kit, and the cost of this is worth the kit alone, even if it was full-price. I already love scalp scrubs and have loved every Oribe product I’ve tried, so I have high expectations for this. For those who pay closer to full price for the kit, it would be awful if this product did not work out. Given its price, I’m kind of hoping it’s not too wonderful. I do not want to buy this on a regular basis.
The 2oz Living proof.® Perfect hair Day™ (PhD) Triple Detox Shampoo retails in this size for $13. Birchbox no longer carries this product. This is a non-stripping, color safe shampoo that gently removes buildup from product, pollution and hard water. I have not tried this one yet, but I think it will pair nicely with a hair mask.
The 3.57oz Davines SOLU Sea Salt Scrub Cleanser is worth $17.74. I’m still on the search for my perfect scalp scrub, so I like that this has another one I have not tried yet. This one claims to deeply yet delicately cleanse, remove dirt, product buildup, and pollution particles at once.
The 1oz R+Co ACID WASH ACV Cleansing Rinse is worth $5.33. I love that I got a sample of this, because I got a full size in a FabFitFun Box. Now, I can try the sample first. If I love it, I can keep the full-size. Should I dislike it, I can pass the full-size on. My history with ACV rinses is mixed.
The 0.3oz Klorane Anti-Pollution Purifying Mist is worth $1.64. Birchbox no longer carries this product. This is a refreshing purifying mist that neutralizes hair and scalp odors accumulated throughout the day, and provides an immediate cooling sensation. I look forward to seeing if this does anything for refreshing my scalp.
The 1oz amika Reset Pink Charcoal Scalp Cleansing Oil is worth $3.73. I gave a sample of this to my husband when his scalp was bothering him. He said it helped his hair feel cleaner and scalp less itchy. We’ll see how it works for me, but I will wait until I get a itchy scalp first. As the winter rages on, it should happen soon.
The 1oz Number 4 Lumiere d’hiver Clarifying Shampoo is worth $3.76. It leaves my hair and head feeling very clean. My scalp is very dry and my hair produces a lot of oil to combat that, but this does not make my hair feel stripped.
The 1oz Number 4 Lumiere d’hiver Reconstructing Masque is worth $11.37. I love that this set comes with a hair mask to try and I love even more that the pairing clarifying shampoo comes with it. Birchbox has sent me foils of this before, and I may have even tried one. With this bigger sample, I will be able to assess the product better.
There is no link for the Birchbox Scalp Scrub Brush, so I can only assume it is worth the remaining $14.25. I’ve wanted one of these for a while, because I cannot always do the best job with my hands and not every product I test comes with one of its own.
Whenever you spend over $35, you can add a free 2-piece sample pack to your cart. This combines with any promo code, because you add it directly to your cart. Discount promo codes are on my Birchbox page, but you can always view the Bonus Shop for GWP promo offers. Promo codes cannot be combined. Choose the one you like best.
Birchbox December 2019 Mystery Sample Pack Items
Whenever you spend over $35, you can add a free 2-piece sample pack to your cart. This combines with any promo code, because you add it directly to your cart. Birchbox sells this for $10 for anyone spending less than $35. It is rare to get one with over $10 in value. I highly discourage anyone spending less than $35 from buying it. My samples were: a Dr. Lipp Miracle Balm ($3.30), and a Love of Color Sharpener ($5).

For this order, I used MRRIGHT for a full-size, Lipstick Queen Dating Game Mr. Right.
This gift was for Aces only and had a $35 minimum. I purchased another kit with this one to get it, which I will review separately.
This is a shade I considered purchasing but never did, so getting a free $24 lipstick is cool.
This bright, warm, rosy-pink shade with hints of coral is quite lovely. It will be a lovely color for spring or summer.
Is the Birchbox The Hair Detox Kit 2.0 Worth It?
This box has a $140 value, if the Birchbox Scalp Scrub Brush is indeed worth the $14.25 to makeup the difference between what I calculated and what Birchbox estimates. My personal value is also $140, because I will try everything in this box. A few are repeats, but I have reasons I want to try them again. Between the scalp brush and the Oribe, I would say this is worth the full price, but I would not want to pay full price knowing it has been as much as 50% off recently. Unless you worry it will sell out, wait.

I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (13 and 8) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 13-year-old to apply it.
