Worst in Beauty 2019 – Bottom 10 Products

By Kimberly

It’s time for the worst in Beauty for 2019. Few things suck worse than spending hard-earned money on an awful product. Whether low-end, mid-range, high-end, or luxury, any money spent is a bad deal when the product is terrible. I really could call this article the 10 Worst Beauty Deals of 2019. The more you spend the more disappointed you are when there is no return on your investment. It is also the reason we are more forgiving when drugstore products let us down but feel more disappointed when a high-end product is a bust. This is why high-end and luxury products make these lists more than drugstore items. Some are just not a fit, but others are universally bad. Okay, nothing is universally good or bad, but some products come close. Of all the products I tried this year, I selected my ten least favorite. I limited the list to products I tried for the first time this year. Deal shoppers do not always try things the moment they release, so these things did not all launch in 2019.

Since I do not return things, I either reluctantly kept or gave away everything on this list. In the scheme of things, this list is a reminder that I test a lot of beauty products every year. No one can like them all. Those who cannot fill a worst list are either fooling themselves or do not try a lot of new things and already know what they love in most categories. You will notice a theme. Many of these products might be wonderful for those of you with normal to oily skin. On my dry skin, they were awful! It surprised me that I did not have a single makeup product this year, but I realized I would have to bump a more deserving product to put a makeup item here.

10 Tigi S Factor Stunning Volume Conditioner

This had an unpleasant smell from the moment I opened it. I figured I just did not like it and continued to use it. It would bother me to the point I would ask others and they would agree my hair smelt stale. Trying to mask the scent did not work either, because the pungent odor just came through. The shampoo smells lovely, so I convinced myself the conditioner had gone bad. There was no way I could finish it. While I was using it, I did not enjoy it anyway. Getting product out of here was so hard. I’d squeeze and squeeze hurting my hand for so little product. Tipping it upside down did not work, because my son would return it right side up EVERY SINGLE TIME. This product was just a mess all the way around. Getting rid of it was a good day. After I tossed it, I looked up reviews and saw others had the same problem. Either there was a bad batch or this product has a perpetual problem.

9 Swisspers 100% Cotton Rounds

Admittedly, I discovered these before 2019. I just tied to make it my mission to use the remainder of the six pack I purchased without trying before the year was over. Entering another year with these awful cottons was not something I wanted to do. After finishing only one, I opened multiple other cottons in my my collection and never opened another one of these. Yes, they are that bad. They’re rough, fall apart, and leave lint behind. Whenever I make a bad investment, I try to see it through, but there is no way I will purchase these again. Future reviews will be from the same bad investment this came from. The cheap rounds from Target are slightly better if you want a cheap option. While I will eventually make it through all the ones I purchased, I cannot even promise 2020 will be the year.

8 davines OI Hand Balm

I loved a hand cream from this brand, so I thought I was going to love this. How did it get one so right and the other so wrong? This has a very strong, perfumed fragrance that I could barely tolerate. The smell lingered until I washed it away. What’s funny about that is it is a hand cream that completely absorbs. Long after I could no longer feel it on my hands I could still smell it. Way to add insult to injury. While some love a moisturizer that completely absorbs, this one absorbs and feels like you did not apply anything once its in. Given its price, it is a true shame.

7 elf Blending Sponge

I spent most of 2019 testing a great number of beauty sponges, so I could write a large comparison article. That article is still coming. Since I do not wear makeup as often as the average beauty blogger, I still have quite a few sponges to go. There is an article going over the three everyone always talks about. The one I was most disappointed in this year is the e.l.f. blending sponge. This sponge is just a tad better than the Sassy and Chic Sponge from the Dollar Tree. For $5 less, I can forgive that one for being junk. Sponges that are comparable in price to this one perform better, which makes this one very disappointing. It is way too stiff, so there is no bounce or give. That makes blending very difficult. You have streaks and lines everywhere. By the time you work your way around the face, the sponge has absorbed all the product. You will have to re-apply it, which will cost you a lot of money.

6 Shu Uemura Art of Hair Essence Absolue Nourishing Oil-in-Cream Camellia Oil

I could not get this to work no matter how hard I tried. If I used a little, it made no difference at all. When I used a lot, my hair looked greasy. Even when I used a moderate amount my hair would look greasy in some parts and untouched in others. Applying this evenly to get it to look nice is not something I accomplished even one time through the duration of the sample. Assuming there is a happy medium or perfect way to apply it, I could not find the balance.

5 Dial Cherry Blossom Moisturizing Hand Soap

I made the mistake of buying three of these based on how I feel about similar scents from this line. This one was overpowering to the point where it was uncomfortable to use it. My husband refused to use it at all, so we had two soaps on the sink to even get through it (one for him and this). The worst part is it did not even lather with one pump every time, so I would use two pumps. Double the pump, double the fragrance. Cherry Blossom is usually a fragrance I love, but this one misses the mark. Not only does it smell very artificial, but it was almost headache inducing. It is rare that I consider tossing a hand wash before finishing it, but I really considered it with this one.

Delectable ultra nourishing Hand Cream lemon & cream

I just want to make it perfectly clear that I bought the 4 pack, and I love 3 of the 4 creams in it. They are amazing. The cream itself is wonderful. It has a nice, hydrating formula. This is rich and does not completely absorb, which I love. All the other fragrances are sweet and pleasant. I could not get over the scent on this one though. There is a stale odor. At first, I thought it went bad before I opened it. Then, I checked reviews. Seems like this scent is just a miss in the otherwise impressive line. It really is a shame, because I would buy the vanilla one or even the coconut one if it was sold separately, but I would not buy the package again. The lemon is that awful.

3 Pacifica Underarm Deodorant Wipes with Coconut Milk & Essential Oils

In 2019, I continued my venture to find a natural, aluminum-free deodorant. This one appealed to me, because I could use it multiple ways, or so it claimed. I could use it as my deodorant, to freshen up on the go, or to cleanse. They really did not do anything for me. No matter how I used them, I smelled very bad. Read my review if you are interested in seeing how I tested them and how they compared to the products I tested them against.

2 hush Prism Airbrush Spray in Malibu Pink

This product originally retailed for $24 and appears to be on clearance in only one color (not the one I had) for $6, so it seems others agree with my assessment. I go into detail in the article I reviewed this in, so I will keep this short. View that article if you want to see what this looks like in my air or what it did to my hair. It gives off an incredible chemical smell that gives me a headache. The amount of frizz and fly-aways with this product are unmatched by anything else I have ever tried. My hair looked liked I was growing pubes on top of my head. Color payoff is matched by drugstore color sprays that are less than half the price.

Lime Crime Unicorn Hair Semi-Permanent Hair Color Tint Oyster

This just doesn’t work on my hair. I tried it on my regular hair and it did nothing. On bleached hair, it did little more than toning the brassiess out of my hair. It should have tinted it this gorgeous purplish gray shade, but my hair came out looking about the same as it did. The only difference was I was out the money I paid for the product. Because I documented the entire process, I will not go into full detail here. Just know that it works for some. For me, it did not work at all.

I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (12 and 7) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 12-year-old to apply it.

Deal or No Deal? What Do You Think?
