Spend $50+, Get a Free Mystery Birchbox Review

By Kimberly

Birchbox frequently offers a free mystery Birchbox with a $50 purchase. This guarantees a minimum of 5 deluxe samples, which often results in a better deal than other GWP offers. I recently redeemed one with the code MYSTERY on a Birchbox order. When it arrived, I knew I had to write an article to review what I received, because it surprised me that much. While the one you receive might vary completely from what I received, it gives you an idea of the process when you redeem this (or any) GWP.

When I redeemed this code, I realized staff would pull an old Birchbox from stock. You can usually tell what month the box is from by the design on the outside.

I took a blogging break in 2017, so I cannot link an article to this box. You can see that the box design is from July 2017 though.

There was even a coupon code inside the box, which places the box back to that time frame. While I realize that most samples will work just fine as long as they remain unopened, it surprised me to see Birchbox is still handing out boxes full of samples that are over 2 years old. I would like to see a first in, first out method. Just be aware that you might get really old inventory if you redeem this promotion.

I also thought it was funny that the card going over the theme of the box said you could flip the card over to save 10%.

The reason it was funny is the other side with the box contents said it was 15% as did the promo code inside, which expired on 08/15/17.

So, what did I get in my really old Birchbox? I got 1 hair product, 1 perfume, 1 makeup product, 1 skincare product, and 1 makeup remover.

The 0.5oz Oribe Matte Waves Texture Lotion is worth $6.18. I love every Oribe product I’ve tried so far. As someone who air dries her hair and has a lot of fly-aways, I look forward to trying this.  Other Oribe products tame without adding too much texture. Hopefully, this does the same.

The 0.23oz Marcelle 3-in-1 Micellar Gel Eye Makeup Remover is worth $1.12. Birchbox does not even carry this product anymore, so the link and pricing was from the Marcelle site. I like trying eye makeup removers. My eyes are sensitive and many meant for the face burn my eyes.

The 0.16oz Avene Cleanance Expert Emulsion is worth $3.20. This has had a name change since this sample was produced. It is now called Avene Cleanance Expert Lotion. As it is recommended for oily skin, I will not use it.

The full size 0.33oz Beautaniq Beauty Blush Serum in Sunrise retails for $16. I already have multiples in this shade, so I am not keeping this one. If I could remember what I thought of this, I would offer a review. Until I try it again, I cannot do that.

The 0.5oz Bobbi Brown Beach is worth $2.24. This has notes of sand jasmine, sea spray, and mandarin. I love beach scents, so I have high hopes for this.

Was the Promo Code for the Free Birchbox with a $50 Purchase Worth It?

Yes, this was a GWP and there are those of the mindset that any GWP is worth it. There is an opportunity cost of choosing one over another though. If you choose a new one, there is a better chance you will get more recent samples. I do not mind older samples, but it is worth mentioning for those who do. Other than the Oribe and possibly the Bobbi Brown, there is nothing in here that has me overly excited. Had I known which box I would get, I probably would have selected a different promo code. That said, it is part of the gamble when you order a mystery GWP. This box has a $28.74 value. My personal value is is $9.54, because I will not keep the duplicate blush or the emulsion for oily skin. It was okay. Hopefully, you have better luck with yours if you choose to go for it.

Let me know below. If your purchase is over $25 (longer subscriptions or purchasing something from the shop with the subscription), you can pick a free item from the bonus shop if you do not use a subscription start-up offer or discount code, which I cover on my Birchbox Deals Page. Some discount codes on that page will not work on subscriptions, but I will post any that work on my Birchbox Subscription Deals Page. You can always add a free two piece sample pack when spending $35, because it combines with any promo code. Tips For Getting the Best Deal lays out all the ways I know to save money at Birchbox. I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (12 and 7) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 12-year-old to apply it.
