My September 2019 Birchbox review is ready. Birchbox subscriptions get customized to your beauty profile. All boxes are a mixture of haircare, makeup, and skincare. There are times when body care items pop up, and you can select an option to receive no more than 6 fragrance vials a year in your profile. You could get a box with 2 haircare items, 2 makeup items, and 1 skincare item or any similar variety, but you will rarely see more than 2 items from any category unless the third is a foil. If you are looking for a box that is mostly makeup or mostly skincare, this is not it. Those looking for a well-rounded sample box may enjoy this subscription.
This is my September 2019 Birchbox review, but you can see a synopsis of a year of Sephora Play Box reviews vs a year of Birchbox reviews. Every year, I review my $10 boxes (for me at least) against each other, so I can declare the annual winner. This is also helpful for those who would like to see a year of reviews for either box in one place. Birchbox did raise its prices for select members, but it is still $10 for me. For those who are not ACES on the $10 plan, I will consider that when I do the annual comparison for 2019.
About the Birchbox Subscription
The $10-$15 charge processes immediately for new subscribers and on the 1st in succeeding months. Boxes usually ship from the 8th through the 12th. At the end of every month (actual date varies), Birchbox will email an option to select a sample (from a choice of 3-5 items), or the featured box where you know all samples up front. Those who respond to that email can also opt out of one type of sample. If you want a sample choice and the featured box, I suggest making a choice and purchasing the featured box separately. Subscribers can review 5 samples for 10 points each once during the lifetime of the account. Those who pay full-price for their subscriptions up front get points to use toward shop purchases. People who use a discount code on up front subscriptions will not get points. No one on a month-to-month plan gets points for the subscription either. The amount spent for the subscription goes toward the $300 annual minimum to achieve Aces status.
September 2019 Birchbox Theme
Birchbox makes a custom box design for each month. This month was pretty plain. I think we’ve seen this one before.
The first thing you normally see when you open a Birchbox is a product card.
The back of the card goes over the theme, Join the Party, Customer Appreciation Day. That takes place 09/18/19, and I have an article to cover the details of that event.
Contents are loose inside the box with a single piece of black foam at the bottom and a single sheet of tissue paper encircling the items. The tissue does seem to help the items from moving around a lot.
September 2019 Birchbox Sample Choices
The three items to choose from were: eyeko Lash Alert! Mascara, R+Co RODEO STAR Thickening Style Foam, or Sunday Riley CEO Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil.
There were four options for the curated boxes.
Curated Box 1- Katia’s Picks includes: Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real! Lengthening Mascara, COOLA® Dawn Patrol™ Classic Primer SPF 30, Marcelle Micellar Water, Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, Lancôme Juicy Tubes Ultra Shiny Lip Gloss, and Living proof.® Full Dry Volume Blast™.
Curated Box 2- Join the Party includes: exo Supply Co. Pure Remover Wipes, smashbox Cosmetics Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick, Smith & Cult Nailed Lacquer Glass Souls, Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume Eau de Parfum, Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin™ Cream, amika 3D volume and thickening shampoo, and amika 3D volume and thickening conditioner.
Curated Box 3- Ingredient Conscious includes: Snow Fox Herbal Youth Collagen Boosting Mask, Naturally Serious Major Moisture Gentle Cream Cleanser, Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips, The Beauty Crop Lighting Crew Highlighting Cream, HUM Nutrition Daily Cleanse® Supplements, davines MOMO Moisturizing Shampoo, and davines MOMO Moisturizing Conditioner.
Curated Box 4- Nighttime Essentials includes: MAC Cosmetics Cleanse Off Oil, Wilma Schumann Skin Care Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads, amika Soulfood Nourishing Mask, My Clarins RE-MOVE Purifying Cleansing Gel, thisworks® deep sleep™ pillow spray, and Daily Concepts Multi-Functional Mother of Pearl Soap Sponge.
Subscribers can always purchase these featured boxes separately for $15 if they want that and a sample choice. Everyone else can purchase a featured box for $20.
There was also an option to Swap Your Box For a Full-Size tarte Rainforest of the Sea H2O Gloss Sandy Toes (not live on the site, so I cannot link it).
Members were given the option to swap the box for Birchbox Loyalty points. I get 1.3 points per dollar as an Ace, so I would never pay $10 for 100 points. That is equivalent of 1 point per dollar.
My choice was the Sunday Riley CEO Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil.
Customer Appreciation Month Bonus
Birchbox is sending a free bag and sheet of stickers to all subscribers in the September 2019 box in honor of Customer Appreciation Day.
That is already a step-up from last year, because it makes sure everyone gets something.
I like this, but I did not add the bag or stickers into my September 2019 Birchbox value.
They do technically add to the value of the box though.
My September 2019 Birchbox review is from box version 66287299. It has 1 skincare product, two makeup products, three hair products, and one perfume.
The Juliette Has a Gun Not a Perfume Eau de Parfum is worth $6.35. I do like this particular scent, but I doubt I will keep this duplicate. At this point, I only keep dupes when I love a fragrance. Spicy and sophisticated describes this perfectly. Cetalox is the only note, so it is unique.
The smashbox Cosmetics Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick in Stepping Out is worth $5.54, assuming I am correct that this is a 0.03oz sample. I have 0.05oz samples and full sizes in this formula. When I compare the bottles, this is my best guess.
I think the formula is okay (for liquid lipstick), which I am generally not a fan of. The color is a beautiful nude. It looks darker on me than it does in the swatch or the tube. It highlights lip lines, but it does not accentuate dry patches. Even though it wears a long time, it leaves my lips feeling dry and parched. This is another duplicate I will not keep.
The 0.16oz Wander Beauty Nude Illusion Liquid Foundation is worth $6.34. This is a formula I wanted to try, so it thrilled me to see it in the box.
Sadly, this light shade is a tad too dark and yellow. It makes it hard to try it when the color is off, because you will either look silly or have to mix it with something else. Neither really paint a picture of how the right shade would perform.
The 0.84oz OUAI Volume Spray is worth $6.72. I do not like the texture this gives my hair. Some may, but I prefer soft hair that I can run my fingers through. This is a duplicate I will not keep.
The 0.17oz Sunday Riley CEO Glow Vitamin C + Turmeric Face Oil is worth $13.60. I’ve wanted this since I got her serum with the same name. They should pair well, and I cannot wait to try this. Well, I have to until I need to open a new oil.
The 0.67oz amika 3D volume and thickening shampoo is worth $1.61. I have fine hair. Even though I have a lot of it, I like trying thickening products. There are days when my hair looks flat. This would probably help.
The 0.5oz amika 3D volume and thickening conditioner has no value to me. Foils get no value assigned unless they are sold that way. Otherwise, they should be free. That said, I like receiving them for my foil challenge. It is even better when they pair with something I already own like the shampoo above. This is a pretty big foil. I should get up to two uses.
Was my September 2019 Birchbox worth it?
The September 2019 Birchbox has a $40.16 value. That brings the value for the average box in 2019 to $43.11. This is the second box since the price increase in April that does not have any full-size products. It also slightly brought down the average value for the year. I wish the trend with full-size products would have continued, because one extra sample is not enough to justify the price increase. My personal value is $21.55, because I will not keep any of the duplicates. I will try all of the products that are new to my collection. A three for six (or seven if you count the bonus foil) box is not the best, but I did still double the value of what I spent. It was worth it.

What are your thoughts on my September 2019 Birchbox review? Do you think it is better than past boxes so far? Let me know below. If your purchase is over $25 (longer subscriptions or purchasing something from the shop with the subscription), you can pick a free item from the bonus shop if you do not use a subscription start-up offer or discount code, which I cover on my Birchbox Deals Page. Some discount codes on that page will not work on subscriptions, but I will post any that work on my Birchbox Subscription Deals Page. You can always add a free two piece sample pack when spending $35, because it combines with any promo code. Tips For Getting the Best Deal lays out all the ways I know to save money at Birchbox. Product reviews do not always make it into the haul article, but you can always type the product into the search bar to see if I’ve mentioned it or reviewed it elsewhere. I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (12 and 7) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 12-year-old to apply it.
