What do you do with all those foil packets you collect? Trying a foil is a great way to see if your skin reacts to the product, you cannot tolerate the smell, the consistency is annoying, or if there is anything about the product that bothers you. Sampling a foil and thinking you need to have that product in your life is rare, but it does happen. This is most likely to happen with products where you can see instant results. My plan is to try a foil of something new or something I have not used in a long time every day during a challenge month. To give my skin a break from constant new products, I will only complete foil challenges in even months. Feel free to take part in this challenge with me. If you are a fellow deal shopper, I bet you have a lot of foils stockpiled in your collection.
I suggest trying a variety of new products instead of too many of one type. Too much change can irritate the skin, and it easier to see how a specific product reacts when you are not introducing new items to that area too often. If you have sensitive skin, I also recommend you only try one new product a day to know what is causing irritation should you react to something. The 30 products I’ve selected for April 2019 are below. As I use them, I will edit in my first impressions. They will not necessarily get used in the order listed. I want freedom to grab whatever item I want each day and write about the products when I choose to. Some foils are big enough for multiple uses, so I may come back and edit more detailed reviews if I notice anything else from extended use.
AHAVA Deadsea Water Mineral Hand Cream sea-kissed – This does not seem to moisturize as well as my beloved one, but it smells better. It’s not that I dislike the scent on the original (like my husband does), but I love this one. It smells like the sea. I think they feel the same going on, but this one absorbs more. Some people like that, but I like a slight feeling of lotion on my hands.
Becca Bronzing Skin Perfector – This was a little thicker than I expected, so it took a little more effort to blend it into the skin. It still looked lovely, and I like the color for my skin tone.
Bobbi Brown Discover Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner Black Ink – This is a great formula. It was smooth going on and stayed put all day.
Bobbi Brown Discover Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner Violet Ink – This is a great formula. It was smooth going on and stayed put all day. I like this color a little more than the black, because it is still pretty bold and less harsh.
Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil – This did not remove as much as the Tatcha or feel as luxurious, but it did a really good job. My skin felt soft afterward.
Breathe Right Nasal Strips – I think these work really well and wish I would remember to apply them every time my nose gets overly congested. They helped me breathe better and in return sleep better when I was sick. Since I was sick the day I wrote this article, I knew I would use these. They help open the nasal passages by pulling the nostrils slightly up.
Briogeo Don’t Despair Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask – I am glad I own a full-size of this, so I can try it again before I decide how I feel. The foil was so large that I decided to apply from top to bottom. That was a mistake because it deposited too much on my scalp. My hair did look and feel softer. Near my roots, it looked greasy, and near the tips it looked frizzy. Hopefully, it was user error, because everyone goes on and on about this one.
Callyssee Hydrating Mask – I could not leave this on the recommended amount of time (20-25 minutes), because it dried and tightened on my face fast. The layer was light, so I am guessing people who own the product will dry down faster by using a thicker application. Then again, I am always saying companys should give you enough for at least one use. Otherwise, you cannot really get a feel for how it works. Thankfully when I rinsed my face after a little over 10 minutes (so half the recommended time), the tightness ceased. My face did not feel more hydrated than usual, so I find it interesting this clay mask is called a hydrating mask. It did make my skin look cleaner and a little brighter without stripping my already dry face too much. This did make my skin feel soft thanks to the exfoliating beads.
Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla hydrating conditioner – The sample was too small, so I cannot give this a full review. It smelled great and conditioned the part of the hair I had enough for. This is thin, so it did not weigh down the portion of hair I used it on.
Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla hydrating shampoo – The sample was too small, so I cannot give this a full review. It smelled great and cleansed the part of the hair I had enough for.
Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow – This is much more subtle than I thought it would be. It’s lovely, but from the sample alone, I cannot say it gives a better glow than the Pixi or Becca ones I compared. I can say this felt more moisturizing, but I had just applied a fantastic moisturizer right before trying this both times.
Clinique pep-start double bubble purifying mask – This was a lot of fun. I loved the bubbling. It left my skin feeling and looking really clean.
Clinique sun-kissed face gelee universal glow – This comes out in a brownish-red-orange shade. It made me nervous, but it blended into the skin beautifully. My skin looked naturally sun-kissed.
Crest 3D WhiteStrips 1 hr Express – The bottom strip fell off in a few short minutes, so it did not help at all. Even though the top strip lasted an hour, I did not notice much difference in color between the bottom and the top.
fresh Soy Face Cleanser – This has a fresh scent that I enjoy. It has a really gentle lather. My skin does not have the squeaky clean feeling I love, but it does not feel stripped either. I think this is nice on my dry skin.
Garnier Whole Blends Gentle Conditioner – It was not too thin or too thick, so it conditioned nicely without weighing it down. My hair smelled like oats afterward, but I like it. This helped my hair look less frizzy and was not as tangled as it usually is.
Garnier Whole Blends Gentle Shampoo – It lathered nicely and rinsed clean. My hair smelled like oats afterward, but I like it. This helped my hair look less frizzy and not as dry as usual.
Hairkop Obliphica Professional Treatment Hair Serum – I do not notice much difference when I apply this on wet hair, but it does make my hair more smooth and shiny when I apply it on dry hair. It does not give my hair a greasy appearance either.
HEMPZ Milk & Honey Herbal Body Moisturizer – This moisturizes nicely for a formula that is only moderately thick. The moisture holds on until the next wash. It passes the scatch test where I purposefully scratch my skin. If it turns white, my skin is dry. When it turns red, my skin is moisturized. With this, it turned red.
Johnson’s Foot Soap – This is really nice. My feet feel so soft and hydrated after soaking them.
Kat Von D lock-it Tattoo Foundation Light 48 – This is one of the worst foundations I’ve ever tried. It highlighted pores and texture on my face that I did not even know was there. The formula falls into every line on my face no matter how fast I apply it and immediately again after I work it back in. Dry patches are highlighted and it looks very cakey. I also think it sits on top of the skin and never really melds with it making me look older and more crepey. If I had to pick the best attribute, it is that it lasts all day. Somehow my freckles shine through even though it is full coverage, which I appreciate. You can see in the photo below (same day I wore the MAC lipstick) that the shade was also too dark and too yellow.
L’Oreal EverSleek Humidity Defying Leave-In Crème – This definitely makes my hair look more sleek and does a nice job of keeping frizz at bay. I see a huge difference in my hair when I use it.
Love Beauty and Planet Argan Oil & Lavender Conditioner – I like the gentle lavender fragrance. It left my hair feeling soft and moisturized. My hair was easier to comb through than it usually is, so this really helped manage it.
Love Beauty and Planet Argan Oil & Lavender Shampoo – I like the gentle lavender fragrance. It lathers well for a sulfate free formula, so it leaves my hair feeling really clean. My hair did not feel stripped and was even less frizzy than usual. This is a great product.
MAC Liptensity Doe, Smoked Almond, Mulling Spices – This does feel more moisturizing than the regular formula, but I find the moisture disappears as the lip color does. It does not penetrate the lips. My lip lines get highlighted, but I do not have any dry patches to test it that way.
Nivea Extended Moisture Body Lotion – It moisturizes nicely for a moderately thick formula. The smell is pleasant and it works into the skin well. I like that it passes my scratch test, so I think it is a nice lotion for warm weather.
Oribe Cote d’Azur Body Crème – This is somewhat rich and very moisturizing. It has the wonderful Oribe scent that I adore. While I would never pay full price for this, I would gladly use any samples I get.
Pur Get A Grip Endurance Eyeshadow Primer – This is inconsistent. I’ve worn this three times. There was slight creasing on one eye and moderate creasing the first time I wore it. The second time left almost no creasing at all. On the third time, one eye held up perfectly and the other had bad creasing.
StriVectin Hair Ultimate Restore Reparation Extreme Deep Repair Mask – It’s possible I did not rinse this out all the way, so I will try it again in the future and remember to rinse for a long time. The front of my hair on both sides refused to dry and looked very greasy. I had to use dry shampoo to stop it from looking greasy. Mt hair was not greasy before using this and it was the only new hair product I used that day. This was the greasy hair culprit.
StriVectin tighten & lift powerlift Instant Tightening Mask – I did not really notice much difference, but I never do with these tightening masks. They are either a gimmick or just don’t work for my skin. While the mask was on, I did feel some light tingling.
tarte maracuja creaseless concealer – The color is a little dark, so I only used it under my eyes more as a color corrector. Yet, I chose not to layer it with a lighter concealer, so I could see how it performed. I did avoid this on my blemishes due to the dark color, so I cannot review it that way. This has a nice formula with decent coverage that does not dry out my under eyes, leave me looking cakey, or crease too much. It would be nice to sample this in a lighter shade, but I think this is a lot better than Shape Tape (so far).
Tatcha Pure one step camellia cleansing oil – Of every cleansing oil I’ve tried so far, this is my favorite. It feels so silky and luxurious. Even after I wash my face, the moisture this provides sticks around. This also removes more makeup than any other oil I’ve tried. When I did my micellar water test after the second cleanse there was barely any makeup on the cotton. I have yet to try a cleansing oil that completely removes all traces of makeup.
vitabath Cupcake Couture Heavenly Coconut Crème – This little packet was enough product to cleanse my entire body. A little product really goes a long way, because it lathers nicely. It smelled sweet and heavenly (as promised). My skin felt really clean afterward and did not feel stripped.
vitabath orchid intrigue moisturizing bath & shower gelee – This does have a strong fragrance, but it is not overpowering. I like the consistency of the jelly formula. It is not so thick that it falls out of my hand, which I have experienced with multiple shower jelly products. While it does lather, it takes a lot of product to build nicely. That alone keeps me from purchasing it.
