Influenster Reviewer’s Choice Beauty Box

I usually do not write an article on beauty boxes I am not purchasing or reviewing, unless it is a grab or pass where I always suggest passing. Otherwise, I would write a review after purchasing it making a grab or pass redundant, but this deserves an exception. This box released in November (according to this video), but I just got an email on it from Influenster yesterday. If Influenster sent me an email on this earlier, I completely missed it. Influenster, the company that grew by providing free products in exchange for social sharing and reviews, is selling a huge box of beauty products. The Influenster Reviewers’ Choice Beauty Box claims it has over $300 in value. It retails for $50. With a gap in the market left when the Allure Beauty Thrills box exited, this is especially welcome. This box even comes with free shipping where I was always annoyed that the other did not. Even better, Influenstore is on ebates. With a 10% cash back offer, anyone who purchases this will get $5 back from ebates.

This video, which is great other than the way the presenter pronounces Oribe, shows the box with some product differences. I like her additions (the Olia Hair colors), do not miss her deletions (I already have the Purity and could easily purchase the EOS and TRESemme separately given their cost), and love that hers has more expensive full-size products (Sunday Riley Good Genes and the dpHue ACV scrub). Her eye cream is a sample while the one now is a full-size, but that is okay with me given the value of the full-sized items traded out in her box. Even though her box is better and easily worth it based on the full-size Good Genes alone, I think it is still a great deal in its current form. Moral of this story is arrive at the beginning when they get released next time, so we do not end up with inferior substitutions. Someone will check her Influenster emails a lot more carefully now that she knows these things are available.

There are only two reasons I am not purchasing this:

The first is I am already over budget on my December 2018 beauty product spend, which happens most years thanks to Christmas. *Yes, I am over budget on December 5th. I blame all the amazing deals from Black Friday and Cyber Monday, because my budget was almost depleted by the time the 1st even hit.

The second is I own most of these things. That would not even concern me if I had not already finished my Christmas shopping (other than on my boys, who do not use a lot of beauty products). I could have easily gifted some of these items to beauty lovers on my list had I not purchased them other things first.

If you have money left in your budget, people you still need gifts for, or want most of these items for yourself, this looks like an amazing box. There are a lot of items in this I already love, and a few I’ve wanted to try, like the Younique Moonstruck Epic Mascara, the CoverGirl TruNaked Chocoholic Eye Shadow Palette, and the EOS Ultra Moisturizing Shave Cream. I cannot justify purchasing a mascara with how many I own. Trying one from a kit (where I get it for a fraction of the price) is hardly the same as purchasing it all full-price, so I will never try this unless I get it in a set. The others are items I am willing to purchase separately when the time is right.

If more kits this appealing get released, I may grab one in the future. Here’s hoping I have money in my budget to grab it, and it has a lot of items I either want for myself or want to gift to someone else. I am still waiting for Ulta to put kits like this together. Ulta carries a mixture of drugstore and high-end items, like the ones in this kit. When Ulta does put kits like this together, they are always samples. Sephora does kits like this (on a smaller scale), but they are all high-end driving up the cost of the kit. Birchbox does kits like this (on a smaller scale), and they are typically a mixture. It lacks some of these traditional drugstore brands. What I would really like to see is a kit like this of all drugstore items. If anyone puts that together, I am down.

When I add up the items in the table with the values Influenster provided, I get $295.51. It makes me think the claim that it has over a $300 value was on the original box from the video above. Without a doubt, that box was worth over $300. There is no way the Sunday Riley has the value it claims, because it only samples larger sizes in nicer bottles. That tube is proof the sample is small, probably 0.17oz. It only has a $28.35 value in the 0.27oz size, and the one here is clearly smaller (click that link to see what it looks like in a bigger sample). Influenster is also placing value on some foils (strangely leaving value off the Garnier). Unless a foil retails that way, I never assign any value to it. My philosophy is foils are generally samples not intend for selling. Alba Botanicals does sell its foils, so I would value it. Influenster lists the value for it as if it were full-size, so I would correct it to the foil size of $2.99.

Whenever I review a kit, I calculate the value of every product and compare it to the advertised value. Since I did not purchase this to confirm the sizes on these, I cannot do that with this kit. That is part of the reason I usually do not write articles on kits I do not pick up. The lady in this video did value hers and came up with an amount under what Influenster advertises. While I still think it is a great deal, I think users can make a better purchase decision when retailers are as meticulous as I am with valuing kits.

Props to the second lady for giving personal value on a kit as I had never seen that in a video before. Since personal value is more important than box value, I really appreciated it. I am not picking this up, so I cannot give you my personal value. Know that I always do that on every kit or subscription I review. Yes, your personal value will vary from mine unless we keep the same items, but it helps me understand what threshold one needs to see a kit as a good value and lets me put more credence into her review. I wish more reviewers did this. She also got closer to pronouncing Oribe correctly. For those who are now wondering, it is or-bay. My husband has actually met the hairdresser who is the namesake of this brand, and that is how he introduces himself. Some who work for the brand pronounce it aura-bay without too much emphasis on the second a. Either of those pronunciations are acceptable.

Thanks to the lady from the second video, I can also fill in some gaps on product details. The Kat Von D Liquid Lipstick is in Lolita, the Becca Highlighter is in Vanilla Quartz, the Love Beauty and Planet item will vary (as it states above), the ColourPop eyeshadow is in Lightening Bug, and the wet n wild highlighter is in Precious Petals. She also mentioned an oil from Undefined that came with her box but is not listed on the product card.

Let me know below. The link to the box in the Influenstore (love that name) is direct, but there are referral links on Influenster and ebates. There are no affiliate links in this post, and Influenster did not ask me to post it. You do not need an Influenster (different from Influenstore) or ebates account to purchase it. My referral links are just there if you want to create either, and if you want to use my links to do so. I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (12 and 7) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 12-year-old to apply it.

  1. Sounds like a great bargain…but, yes, not in my budget either. I’m still working with a low-buy for the remainder of the year and, hopefully, headed toward a no-buy for 2019. We’ll see how that pans out…no pun intended. (lol)

  2. Also, as a side note, I pulled up the box on the Influenster site, and my Ebates pop-up said 10% cash back…so makes the box $45 if it qualifies. So, tempting…looks like a HUGE box.

  3. Notcreative, I totally hear you on the over budget comment. There were some seriously good deals during the holidays. If you don’t mind my asking, what is typically your budget for beauty items? Is it month to month?

  4. It varies. I do not have a specific amount each month. After all necessary bills get paid, I set aside extra money. If I have no vacations or other things coming up, I figure out how much I can spend.

Deal or No Deal? What Do You Think?
