Sephora Play October 2018 Subscription Box 975 Review

Sephora Play! is a subscription box that offers five deluxe beauty samples and a bonus foil packet or perfume vial for $10 a month plus tax. Shipping is free. Only items sold at Sephora come inside the box so most items are from well-known, high-end brands. While Sephora does carry a few low-end and luxury brands, they do not really appear in the subscription boxes. There is not a traditional rewards program with this box so you cannot get points for referring friends or writing reviews. It does award 10 Beauty Insider points to Beauty Insiders, 12.5 points to VIB members, and 15 points to VIB Rouge members. This box also applies $10 toward your purchase minimum to maintain your Beauty Insider status. Visit my Sephora page for descriptions on points and status. The $10 charge processes immediately for new subscribers and from the 1st through the 4th for succeeding months. Boxes usually ship from the 11th through the 15th.

The Beauty Bag was the only place to see complete sample history. Although it worked when I wrote the article for the January 2018 box, it is not working now. In case the link is ever recovered, I will leave it here for now. It does remove items Sephora no longer carries. You can view contents on one box at a time accessing the links through your Sephora order history. There are times when I can see all my Sephora history from that link and other times where it cuts older orders off. The past boxes link does give complete details on the last six boxes.

Boxes get customized based on your profile. Make sure you update your Play! Profile, because they do not use the Sephora profile for this box. There is not a lot of variety in the boxes, but there is enough to justify updating your profile. If you received a box that does not suit you, update your profile. You can continue to play with your settings until you are happy with what you’re receiving. If no adjustments help, cancel your subscription. You can view all samples that were available this month through shop the products link. There are at least 12 items (broken link so I cannot open it) listed for October 2018. My box is version 2127975.

Each box comes with a Play! Book. This is a booklet that unfolds into a large sheet of photo paper to show info about all the items inside the box.

It also goes over the theme for the box and shows how the products tie into the theme. The theme for October box is Scary-Good Beauty.

Each box comes with a Play! Pass. The Play! Pass is valid in-store though the end of the following month. It is redeemable with any purchase (even items not received in the box) for 50 Beauty Insider points. Only one 50 point pass is valid per day, so using two in a single trip will not work. These points may take up to 24 hours to apply. You can also use the Play! Pass for a one-on-one consolation with a beauty expert. Using promo code PLAYOCT18 online with a $20 purchase will also award 50-points. That code is valid through 11/30/18. Getting 50-points for an online order is not ideal unless you have free shipping and are only spending $20 or really have no interest in any of the active promo codes. At $25 spent, there are always a number of promo codes you qualify for. Considering it takes 100-points to redeem one perk and the perks are usually about the same as the free product in a promo code, you’d pass on a promo worth 100-points to redeem the promo code for 50-points.

It takes 100 points to receive a deluxe perk, but online orders $25 and over can use a promo code, which is usually deluxe perk. While this is wonderful for those trips you have to make in store or when you are spending less than $25, it will generally be a better deal to order online and redeem a deluxe perk.

Items come inside a thick ziplock bag. It is the second time they arrived in this bag, so it is safe to say this is the new bag. I think the other bags were better for gifting, but these are better for recycling.

The 0.16oz MAKE UP FOR EVER Matte Velvet Skin Full Coverage Foundation is worth $6.02. With the shade is Y245, soft sand, it is hard to say whether I will open this or not. I have swatched this shade in other formulas before and it is a tad dark. This is a formula I have not tried, but I will have a hard time trying it and giving it a proper review if I have to mix it with something else to lighten it. Knowing how much of a certain aspect gets attributed to this and how much goes to the product I use to lighten the shade is hard. Thus, I do not really offer reviews on foundations unless I only use the foundation I am testing. If I decide to keep this, I will edit in a picture and review (and a swatch if I remember).

The 0.03oz Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow+ Volumizing Eyebrow Gel is worth $7.20. This is a product I love, so I will definitely keep this duplicate. While I would have preferred shade 2, I know shade 1 will work for me. I am not going to swatch it, because it will be a while before I need to open this shade. What I love about this product is I can use this on top of groomed brows or apply only this for a fast and easy improved look over my natural brows. It really works great either way. It is a foolproof product that adds volume and makes brows appear more dense.

The 0.1oz tarte Quench Hydrating Primer – Rainforest Of The Sea™ Collection is worth $3.20 assuming the full-size is 1oz. Tarte does not list the size anywhere. It looks like a 1oz tube based on photos and videos, but my value is off if it is not an ounce. My skin is dry, so I love hydrating primers the most. Hopefully, this works out nicely, because it does have a gel consistency. Those typically lack the moisture my skin needs.

The 0.33oz Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum is worth $26.07. This is a sample I have received so many times over the years. Someone always takes it from me before I get a chance to try it myself. While I cannot promise that will not happen again (so many primers to try before this), I see why this is such a coveted sample. It is a very generous size of a somewhat expensive serum. One day, I would really like to try this.

The 0.6oz fresh Soy Face Cleanser is worth $5.29. This is a face wash so many rave about, but I have not tried it yet despite having multiple samples. I may place this in my December foil challenge if I remember, because I want to try the foil to see how many of the deluxe samples (if any) I should hold onto. Until then, I might keep it.

The 0.04oz MAISON MARGIELA ’REPLICA’ Sailing Day is worth $1.48. As I mentioned in my recent review of this, it is my favorite fragrance of all time. I was already planning on purchasing it based on a previous sample. Getting a new sample will delay the inevitable purchase, but it will happen. This has such a fresh scent, and it nailed what the open ocean smells like.

The box has a $49.26. value. This brings the average box value for the year to $36.34. My personal value is possibly $49.26, because I may keep everything in it. Two samples are items I love, so I want the duplicates. Though I have owned two of these before, I have not tried ether. Thus, I am unsure if I will hold onto them. The last two are brand new to my collection and things I want to try. One has an off-color and one has a consistency that is not the most compatible with my skin type, so I might pass them on if someone wants them more than I do before I get the chance to try them. Overall, I am really happy with this box.It has a high value, two items I know I will love, two items I have not received samples of anywhere else, and the two I have yet to try are beloved by many. If you have any questions I did not cover, please visit the FAQ section. I will answer any posted here if I know the answer., Inc.

I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (12 and 7) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 12-year-old to apply it.

  1. I love that Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum! I received one in a Sephora Play box awhile ago, and I purchased it with points when it came available the last time for 100 points. It lasts a very long time because it is really thin in consistency and you don’t need a lot at one time.

  2. Thanks, I will try to keep this one and actually try it. I have a few serums I have to work through first. This is even more generous of a sample knowing that it is thin.
