See my Grab or Pass on the Superstars Kit Everyday Must Haves, and all 2019 Sephora Promotions, Sales, GWP, Deals, Promo Codes, and Events. As I mention below, this Sephora Favorites Superstars Kit is worth $40, so I purchased and reviewed it when it dipped down to that price in the Labor Day Sale.
The latest Sephora Favorites Superstars Kit for 2018 is still available. The Beauty Insider Appreciation Event opens to Rouge members today. Rouge members get 20% off one online purchase and an unlimited number of 20% off opportunities in store until the event ends. All beauty insider levels get a discount, but they start on a different date. I’ve gone over the details for that event in another article, so I will not mention this event again here. While looking for ideas on what I should buy, I came across it again. This is something I never considered at full-price, but could I justify it with a 20% discount? As a deal shopper, I typically enjoy the favorites sets Sephora puts out. This one was the first Superstars Kit in years I am not interested in.
This $80 Superstars Kit includes:
– 0.11 oz/ 3.2 g Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Pure Hollywood (full-size)

– 0.019 oz/ 0.55 mL Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper (full-size)
– 0.19 oz/ 5.5 mL Lancôme Cils Booster XL Super-enhancing mascara base (Sephora lists this as 0.18oz, but after getting it, I can confirm it is the 0.19oz full-size)
– 0.12 oz/ 3.5 g Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder
– 0.16 oz/ 5 mL Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Smoothing Primer

There are four full-size items in this kit. If you were to purchase the full-size items separately, you would pay $85.50. That means anyone who wants all four should definitely grab the set. They can save $5.50 and get a lot of free samples.
My problem is the offering of the four full-size items. One is lashes. I rarely wear lashes, so I have never spent $20 on a pair. Thus, I do not own the $20 set in this kit. As I rarely wear lashes, I do not care to either. Most of the women I know never or rarely wear lashes. While I am open to receiving new lashes to try, I do not use them as a selling point for a kit. That means other items in the kit must stand out to get my attention.
I love the CILS booster. On top of already owning multiple full-sizes of this, I own many samples of this. Priming my lashes is also a step in my makeup routine I usually skip to save time. A lot of other people own samples of this, because it is a relatively easy sample to come by. Thus, it is not a selling point on any kit to me.
The Kat Von D liner is another item I own multiple full and sample sizes of. I obviously enjoy it or I would not keep collecting it. Well, I enjoy it as much as I can for someone who is terrible at liquid liner thus rarely wears it. Again, it is just too easy to come by. Once again, that means it is not a selling point.
That brings us to the liquid lipstick. Have I ever mentioned how much I dislike liquid lipstick? I’ve actually been purchasing more in the past year (as the fad is finally dying because that is how I roll) to find one I don’t hate. My efforts continue. This is a shade I do not already own (again I do not buy a lot of liquid lipstick). Liquid lipstick will never be a selling point for me, unless I manage to find the one I love and am willing to wear for longer than a product test. I purchased an Anastasia liquid lip earlier this year to test and still have not brought myself to try it out. You can imagine how long this would sit around waiting for its testing day.
So, I own two of the four full-size products with surpluses and do not have much interest in the other two. Could the samples save this kit for me? My biggest issue with any set is when it has too many samples. I never like to pay too much for samples. That’s what subscription boxes and gifts with purchase are for. Let’s briefly touch upon these samples though.
I own EVERY single one. That’s right. All of them already exist in my collection. Sephora could introduce us to some new items. Instead, it curated a set of items it often places in Sephora Play Boxes, Promo codes, and Point Perks. As someone who used to purchase almost every single Sephora Favorites kit, I have been extremely disappointed in some of the recent offerings. They are either mostly samples or repeats of things we already have.
Yes, I get including cult classics for new makeup enthusiasts, but kits that only have staples with no new offerings will usually exclude long-time beauty lovers. Even throwing in one more full-size item that was a new release could have changed my perception of this kit. There are only three types of people I would recommend this to. Everyone else should pass. If you are buying this as a gift for a makeup lover, make sure the person fits one of these categories (or give him/her the receipt to return it). I’ve already covered the first two: someone who wants all four full-size items, or someone who is new to makeup. Someone new to makeup would probably not have a stockpile with all these samples.
The only other person I would get this for is someone who does not mind paying for samples AND already loves most of these items. I love many of these, but I despise paying this much for samples. From the Laura Mercier setting powder, to the Marc Jacobs Highliner, to the Urban Decay setting spray, to the Hourglass primer and more, there are a lot of great samples in this kit.
If you follow my blog and others like it, you can get a lot of these samples for cheaper than purchasing an $80 kit. A single Sephora Play box for $10 could house 5 of these samples. Trading in 100 beauty insider points could get you one for free. Purchasing a full-size item you know you want and redeeming a promo code could also get one for free. You could wait for Sephora to offer its sample bags and receive 6-8 samples like this for free. For the brands that Ulta carries, it typically offers huge GWP bags. For those who really enjoy sampling and do not mind paying for samples, you can get 8 months with a $10 subscription for $80.
Yes, this post was a little more negative than usual, but I feel strongly that this is only a deal for three types of people. I am trying to help those on the fence pass. Plus, we have to weed through the bad to get to the good when deal hunting. If it sits long enough, Sephora will place it in the sale section. Then, you can decide if it is worth the purchase at a lower price. For me, I would need it to dip to around $40. It is a shame, because I purchase this set almost every year. Hopefully, another set will get released before the fall discount this November. If not, at least I can rest assured that Birchbox has killed its Limited Edition Boxes.
I was pursuing the sale section on 08/30/18 to see what items made it into the Labor Day sale (click the link for details on the event). This set popped up with the exact price I said I would consider it at. My Beauty Insider Appreciation Code is still valid, so the price would be even lower. Since this dipped to the price I said I would purchase it at, I reviewed it.
What are your thoughts on the Sephora Favorites 2018 Superstars Kit? Let me know below. Sephora does not inform any Beauty Insider of all promotions. It does list a great deal of them on its Beauty Offers page, but I list some it does not on my Sephora Deals Page. Between the ones it lists and the ones I list, you can catch most of them. Subscribe to emails to get targeted offers. If you’re spending over $25 online, there is always a promo code that you can apply. Most major events run on a set schedule, which is why I track them.
