Birchbox gives at least 5 deluxe beauty samples each month for $10. Some boxes have more than 5, but anything over 5 is usually a foil. Boxes get customized to your beauty profile, and you can opt out of one type of sample per box during sample choice. All boxes are a mixture of haircare, makeup, and skincare. There are times when body care items pop up, and you can select an option to receive no more than 6 fragrance vials a year in your profile. You could get a box with 2 haircare items, 2 makeup items, and 1 skincare item or any similar variety, but you will rarely see more than 2 items from any category unless the third is a foil. If you are looking for a box that is mostly makeup or mostly skincare, this is not it. Those looking for a well-rounded sample box may enjoy this subscription.
The $10 charge processes immediately for new subscribers and on the 1st in succeeding months. Boxes usually ship from the 8th through the 12th. At the end of every month (actual date varies), Birchbox will email an option to select a sample (from a choice of 3-5 items), or the featured box where you know all samples up front. Those who respond to that email can also opt out of one type of sample. If you want a sample choice and the featured box, read this article. Subscribers can review 5 samples for 10 points each once during the lifetime of the account. Those who pay full-price for their subscriptions up front get points to use toward shop purchases. People who use a discount code on up front subscriptions will not get points. No one on a month-to-month plan gets points for the subscription either. The amount spent for the subscription goes toward the $300 annual minimum to achieve Aces status.
Birchbox makes a custom box design for each month.
The first thing you usually see when you open a Birchbox is a product card. It lists the items in the box and the price to purchase the full-size.
The back of the card usually goes over the box theme, which is Soak in the Sunshine.
Contents are loose inside the box with a single piece of black foam at the bottom. As you can imagine, fragile samples move around too much inside the box and are subject to breaking.
In February, we were able to skip product type. It was the first time it ever happened, and I have not seen the option since. I made a point of triple checking the email and selection screen. It makes me wonder if February really was the only month it ever happened. Birchbox should bring that option back. If it does, I will skip perfume most months. The three items to choose from were: Vita Liberata Fabulous Self-Tanning Gradual Lotion, Love of Color One & Done Shadow Stick Heavy Petal, or the No4 Jour d’Automne Sugar Texturizing Spray. Those who selected the featured box got all five of these samples: Georgette Klinger Coconut Cleansing Milk, QUAI Volume Spray, Wander Beauty Catch the Light Highlighter and Glowtion, Whal Myung Skin Elixir, and KNC Beauty All Natural Collagen Infused Lip Mask. Subscribers can always purchase a featured box separately for $10 if they want that and a sample choice. Everyone else can purchase a featured box for $15.
The Box I ended up with is 54843679, which includes my sample choice. It has one hair product, one lip product, one self tanner, and two skincare items. This is a rare no makeup box, but some may consider the lip treatment or the self tanner as makeup.
The 0.14oz Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate is worth $6.58. Shortly before I discovered I was getting this, I decided I wanted to try it. I had a foil packet and liked it enough from the foil to want to try it for longer. My plan was to purchase it after I worked through some of the oils in my stash. While I am unsure if it recovers as it claims, I love the way it feels. It hydrates beautifully without feeling greasy. Once it sinks all the way in my skin, there is no sticky feeling a lot of oils leave behind. This also has a beautiful, almost sleep-inducing scent that makes me wait until right before bed to wash my face and apply it.
The 1.69oz Vita Liberata Fabulous Self-Tanning Gradual Lotion is worth $7.50. I recently received one of these in an Ulta GWP or I would have selected it. If I like the one I receive from Ulta, I will keep this one. Even though it is a generous sample, it usually takes over an ounce of product to do my whole body with these products applied with a tanning mitt. That means I will probably have leftover from the first tube but not enough for a second application. By having a second tube, I may have enough for 3 treatments. This does state it is a gradual lotion so I may chance applying it with my hands and washing them right after to have less waste. My plan (for now) is to keep this duplicate.
The 0.1oz Clarins One-Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser with Orange Extract is worth $0.90. This is another product I have a sample of but have not yet tried. Until I try it, I am unsure if I will keep this duplicate. It is a lot smaller than the other one I have so the benefit of trying this first is I have a bigger sample to gift if I do not like it.
The 1oz No4 Jour d’automne Sugar Texturizing Spray is worth $4.49. I selected this, because it was the only choice I did not already own. Sea salt sprays are not my favorite type of hair product, because I do not like the texture they give my hair. Because I have never tried a sugar spray, I cannot say if it feels similar. In my mind, I want to believe sugar will be softer than salt. We’ll see.
The 0.17oz Hanalei Lip Treatment is worth $6.54. I’ve promised a lip treatment article for some time now and keep buying more to test. To give myself plenty of time with each of them, I am going to push the article to this winter. Every lip balm I purchase or receive in a box or kit gives me an extra product to compare. There are so many I have not opened yet, because I like to stick with one for while to see how it performs over time.
This box has a $26.01 value. That brings the value of the average box for 2018 to $30.85. My personal value is also $26.01, because I will probably keep my two duplicates (unless I try the originals and hate them). If I do hate both, my personal value would dip below $20. Considering how much I wanted more Kiehl’s oil and can never get too many lip treatments for my impending lip article, this box is a success whether the other products work out or not. Have you ever really wanted a sample only to find out that a subscription box or kit you are getting anyway already has it? Isn’t that a great feeling!

I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (12 and 7) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 12-year-old to apply it.
