The Ulta Beauty Spring 2018 21 Days of Beauty will run from March 18th through April 7th. Twice a year, usually starting in March and September, Ulta has a 21 day sale where select brands or items get discounted up to 50% off for one day only. Every day during the semi-annual event there are at least two beauty steals. There are also Hot Buys that run throughout the entire event. Most events also release Beauty Samplers, Try Me Kits. Spring tends to get the better steals. These deals come from the upcoming catalog, and the online link from the special event page. Deals listed in the printed catalog are in-store and online. All online exclusive deals are only listed online. All Steals ship free for Platinum and Diamond members. They ship free with a $50 purchase for UltaMate members.

Reviews of Steals and Hot Buys I’ve Tried

I got sick right before the event started and had no intention of contaminating makeup. Although my reviews will probably be too late to help with purchase decisions, I will eventually edit in my thoughts on the products I’ve mentioned but have not tried).

PÜR 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Powder Foundation SPF 15 – (review pending; if I can find this before the event, I will review it).

juice BEAUTY STEM CELLULAR Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer – This moisturizer is fine. I cannot remember loving or hating it. It is not as thick as moisturizers I prefer for my dry skin.

BUXOM Full-On Lip Cream – I really like this product. It is a gloss that is not glossy or sticky. My lips look more plump but do not feel uncomfortable when I wear it. They feel more hydrated with this one than when my lips are bare. The pigmentation is nice.

Clarisonic Mia 2 Skin Cleansing System – I own the Plus, not the Mia. My skin is too sensitive to use the Clarisonic too often so I reserve it for when I want my face really clean. At times, it is only once or twice a week. If you buy this, I suggest exercising some trial and error to see how often your skin can tolerate it. This exfoliates as it deeply cleanses and some skin does not like too much exfoliation.

Urban Decay Cosmetics Eyeshadow – I’ve never tried an Urban Decay single I did not like. There are very few shades in palettes I do not like either, and I own a lot of Urban Decay palettes. They are very pigmented and usually easy to blend. Unless you like really simple eye looks or have a lot of time to get ready, you probably won’t reach for singles too often. Stick to buying the ones that are not available in your favorite Urban Decay palettes or your favorite shades in the palettes you’ve already hit pan on.

Benefit Cosmetics – Spending $50 to get a free brow wax (now worth $21) is something I’ve done many times during the Days of Beauty. I have had my brows done at the Benefit Brow Bar a lot. Other than one bad experience where my usual brow specialist must have confused me with someone else and took my brows a little too thin, I have always been happy with the result. It took almost two years to regain the fullness she took away at that appointment so my trips to the brow bar slowed down drastically as I grew them back. At every other visit, they are always almost perfectly shaped thanks to the guidelines they use. Benefit is a cutesy brand, but it has many products I love, especially for brows. Gimme Brow is my favorite Brow Gel, and I say that knowing how much I love the Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel. I got a notification from the Ulta app on 03/14/18 that this product is finally back in stock online and will be back in stores on 03/31/18. There are many other items I love like: Hoola, The Porefessional, Watt’s Up, High Beam, That Gal (but the price per ounce is outrageous), Big Easy, all the tints, and Majorette. All of the boxed blushes are nice, but my shade recommendation would depend on your skin tone and preference. I loathe Dew the Hoola (ugly mustard yellow shade), They’re Real eyeliner (at least partly due to user error), and They’re Real mascara (too wet for my hooded eyes). Everything else I’ve tried falls somewhere in the middle, including the Bad Gal Bang mascara. I love the volume, but even with one coat, it is a little clumpy. Granted, I have not tried everything so feel free to ask me below if you want advice on something specific.

Becca Backlight Priming Filter – This is a beautiful primer for my dry skin and it definitely blurs imperfections. View my article for more info and pictures of how it looks.

Lancome Hypnôse Drama Instant Full Volume Mascara – This is a nice mascara, but I would not buy it. It definitely provides volume but there is just something that prevents me from loving it. Unless you’ve tried this before, getting a sample is actually pretty easy with a Lancome GWP.

LORAC PRO Contour Palette with Contour Brush – (review pending; if I can find this before the event, I will review it).

Stila Convertible Color – I really like this on my cheeks, because it makes them look hydrated and is decently long-lasting (as long as I set it with a powder blush). It is not that I dislike it on my lips, but it has a texture I do not prefer in my lip products. There is a slip.

tarte Tarteist Double Take Eyeliner – (review pending. If I can find this before the event, I will review it).

Estee Lauder Travel Size Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex II – I do like this serum. Until I try it for longer, I’d stop short of saying I love it. It gets sampled so often that I cannot recommend purchasing a sample, even for half price.

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Super Curling & Lifting Mascara – This is one of the few mascaras that actually holds the curl in my straight lashes. It flakes off on my hooded eyes and gets clumpy a little fast to justify purchasing a tube. I would happily use free samples though.

bareMinerals 5-in-1 Advanced Performance Cream Eyeshadow Broad Spectrum SPF 15 – I actually want to experiment more with this before I offer a review.

PETERTHOMASROTH Un-Wrinkle Peel Pads – I purchased these during the Love Your Skin Event in January. My skin does not react to them. There is a slight burn when it crosses open skin (usually from picked acne). It is nothing too uncomfortable. Hopefully, I can offer a better review closer to the day these release. At this point, I am afraid to judge them one way or the other. They are not a product I see instant results on so I can say that.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz Pencil – I really love this pencil when I want a natural look. It helps me draw fine hair-like strokes.

Mario Badescu – I’ve tried a lot of Mario Badescu products. My favorites are the Whitening Mask, which makes my skin look so bright, and the Facial Spray With Aloe, Herb and Rosewater, which makes my skin feel refreshed. The only product I remember really disliking was the Strawberry Scrub. It was just too abrasive. I remember wondering what the Flower and Tonic Mask did, because I never noticed a difference at all when using it.

Butter London Glazen Eye Gloss – (review pending. If I can find this before the event, I will review it).

Laura Geller Baked Blush-n-Brighten – This, along with the tarte Amazonian Clay blushes, is the best blush formula I’ve tried. Most blushes disappear on my dry cheeks, but this seems to hold on the longest. Pink Grapefruit is my favorite color.

StriVectin Power Starters Tightening Trio – I love the neck cream in this set. It could be placebo effect but my neck just feels more smooth and moisturized when I use this versus a standard face cream. If it was cheaper, I’d probably purchase it. Until then, I will only consider it when it graces events like this one.

Lipstick Queen Frog Prince Lipstick – (review pending. If I can find this before the event, I will review it).

DERMABLEND Loose Setting Powder – I remember wanting to try this really bad. Then, I finally got my hands on it and tried it a couple of times. Is it a bad sign that I cannot remember what I thought? The past 14 months have been pretty bad for me, but I will try this again before the event.

Cargo Swimmables Collection – I like the blushes from this line. Although I really doubt they are water resistant, they last longer on my cheeks than a lot of other powder blushes.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primers – While they are not my favorite eyeshadow primers (NARS and LORAC are), I have liked every Urban Decay primer I’ve tried. The anti-aging is probably my favorite. I seem to get the least amount of creasing with that. When I wait a couple of minutes between applying the primer and a light shade or setting powder before applying eyeshadows, I get a crease free application and easy blending (depending on the eyeshadow palette).

I have tried some of the tarte lip products but I am going to refrain from reviewing them. Since they are not products I use often and my tarte lip crayon arrived broken, I cannot offer purchase advice one way or the other. If I find any of these products in my collection, I will try to get reviews up before the event.

MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ – I know this is technically not a setting spray, but that is what I use it for the most. It makes the makeup melt into the skin. Urban Decay setting sprays do a better job of making makeup last if that is your goal. This is also nice to foil eyeshadows. Since I have never actually used it to prep or prime my skin, I cannot offer a review for the intended purpose of the product. When using it for other things, I love it. If I did not already have 4 bottles (3 are minis but still), I would probably purchase this steal.

Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara – This is a dry mascara so it does not transfer to my hooded eyes. Because it is dry, it tends to flake off onto my face during the day. If I am going somewhere for a short time, I will wear this. It is not an all day mascara for me.

LORAC Pro Palette 3 – I love the colors in this palette more than anything else. Like all the Pro palettes, it is a little powdery. There is a lot of chunk in the glitters. Unlike the original Pro palette, this stays crease free when I wear it. Colors blend nicely.

Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional Face Primer – I really love this primer for smoothing out my pores. It makes everything I place on top of it look nicer. This is way too thick to place all over my skin and does not play well with my dry skin. Thus, I only apply it to areas where I have a lot of larger pores, around my T Zone.

MAC Instant Artistry Lip Prep Nude Kit – I purchased one of these sets in red last year, but I have not tried it yet. The lipstick and pencil from MAC are products I am already familiar with. It is just the primer that I have not tried yet. People seem to love or hate MAC lipsticks. That makes me one of the few without a strong opinion. They are nice, and I like them. While they are not the most moisturizing formula, they do not fade as fast as moisturizing formulas. Application is always nice, and I love the vanilla scent. My lip lines are not overly accentuated, and most colors do not highlight dry patches on my lips. The lip pencil is stiff, but it stays in place once applied.

Instead of writing a separate review for Ulta Collection products, I will talk about everything here. The eyeshadows are hit or miss. Some are garbage and others are so nice they surprise me. Most are average at best. The higher the price per ounce, the better the chance they are nice. I still need to experiment with other other eye products. Both the smoothies and the hand soaps are nice. While they are not the most moisturizing, they smell nice, rinse clean, and do

bareMinerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lip Color – I have yet to find a traditional liquid lipstick I actually enjoy. My dry lips look flaked and cracked when I wear liquid lipsticks. The way they feel is even worse. This is not a traditional liquid lipstick, because it is not transfer proof. It does last a lot longer than traditional bullet lipsticks. Thanks to it never completely drying down, it does not make my lips look or feel bad. It is a formula I like. After the winter is officially over, I plan on testing more liquid lipsticks for a comparison series.

tarte Ready, Set, Radiant Skin Mist  (review pending. If I can find this before the event, I will review it).

Laura Geller Spackle (review pending. If I can find this before the event, I will review it).

LORAC Pro Matte Lip Color (review pending. If I can find this before the event, I will review it).

Lipstick Queen Saint – Sheer Lipstick – This feels like a lip balm with a sheer wash of color. It is extremely hydrating and comfortable. Unlike colored lip balms, it tends to stay between the lines.

Lipstick Queen Sinner – Opaque Lipstick – This is a very comfortable formula. It wears comfortably. My lip lines are not accentuated and it does not highlight my dry patches.

Julep When Pencil Met Gel Long-Lasting Gel Eyeliner – This is the closest formula I’ve tried to my beloved Marc Jacobs Highliners. It glides on just as beautifully and looks just as pigmented. Unless my eyes are really watery that day, it is long-lasting, too.

Leaders – Still experimenting with this brand. No review yet.

Shape Tape Concealer – I’ve only sampled this, but I still have pros and cons. The coverage is great and from far away it looks beautiful. Up close, it accentuates fine lines and dry skin. This is something I’d consider for an event where I am taking pictures, but I would not want this for everyday wear. My undereyes are too dry and this makes them feel worse.

Tips for the Sale

I highly recommend studying the online brochure, because it lists all products (including items added after the catalog printed and items that are available online only). UltaMate members should also get a physical copy in the mail (that includes items for sale in-store and online). It is a good idea to plan your purchases ahead of time so you are ready to strike the moment the deal releases. Ulta runs on Central time so daily steals are available right at 10pm PST. That usually means steals from the previous day disappear right at 10pm PST. If you’re up past 10pm PST, that is the best time to order (unless you’re waiting to see if a Beauty Break or new gift with purchase releases in the morning). While the deals have run a little over, Ulta usually cuts them off right on time. The best deals are usually gone when you wake up in the morning from people who started shopping right as the day switched over so plan strategically. Waiting for the Beauty Break announcement with popular steals will usually backfire.

Rules for the Sale

Ulta says each person can only purchase two of each steal. Placing multiple online orders (if the system prevents you from adding more than 2 of one item in a single order) or picking up in person usually gets around the limit. Although I’ve only ever received two at a time, I’ve missed out on Too Faced Sweethearts Blush and tarte Bronzer on days I saw multiple people buying more than two. Some stores may hold customers to the limit, but my store clearly does not. The most important rule is steals are 24 hours only and while supplies last. If they sell out in 10 minutes, that is it. You will not get a rain check and can only hope the deal you missed will repeat in the next event. Many deals repeat but plenty do not.

I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (13 and 8) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 13-year-old to apply it.
