The Sun Safety Kit for 2016 is available now. No one puts Favorites Kits together the way Sephora does. This review goes over the 2016 Sephora Favorites Sun Safety Kit I purchased at the VIB Rouge Event on 06/05/16. It is my favorite set of the year, because I love sunscreen. I love that Sephora donates $20 of the $32 price tag to the Skin Cancer Foundation. My Dad has skin cancer, so I appreciate a cause that furthers cancer research and helps protect me from the sun at the same time. There are 15 deluxe sun protection items in the set making each item a bargain at $2.13.
Even when my sunscreen stockpile is insane, I will always purchase this set. I’ve purchased this every year since 2013 and while a lot of items repeat, you will always get to try new items with the classics. Sunscreen lasts for three years unopened and most print the expiration date right on the tube. Everything in the set gives at least one year to use it, but most items give more time. There are years I use more sunscreen than others, so I will have stockpiles some years and finish a complete set other years. Most of my 2015 items have not been used, but many are far from expiring.
Some Sephora stores accidentally put this out too early and other stores put it out for the VIB Rouge event. Rumor was official release date in stores and online will be 06/15/16, but it released a few days early on the 12th. It is usually released in mid May, so it is unusual to see it released so late this year. The good news is it is usually sold out by June, so if you’re new to the set, you’re not too late.
Sephora values this set at $127, which is less than the $155 value the year before. While the value seems to dip every year, it is still an incredible deal. It also feels great knowing Sephora gives most of it to charity.
The set includes:
-0.6oz Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ For Face Water Resistant Sunscreen WetForce is worth $10. I always use the smallest size to price samples, because it is the cheapest buy-in. It just so happens the smallest size retails for $16.66 an ounce while the larger size retails for $18 an ounce. On that note, always remember to price items out before purchasing. The larger size is not always cheaper per ounce. This is a regular brand in the sun safety kit, and a star. It protects extremely well and would be a perfect sunscreen if not for the white cast.
-0.3oz Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution Ecran Multi-Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen is worth $7.41. This is a wonderful sunscreen, so I am always happy to get new samples.
-0.5oz Supergoop! Defense Refresh Setting Mist with Rosemary Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50 is worth $6. I also received this in a Birchbox, but I have not tried it yet. It will be perfect to try this summer.
-0.34oz Coola makeup setting spray spa 30 face Green Tree & Aloe is worth $7.20. I also received this in a Birchbox, but I have not tried it yet. It will be perfect to try this summer.
-0.25oz Kate Somerville Daily Deflector Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Anti-Aging Sunscreen is worth $7.06. This is the first item unique to the set that I have not received a sample elsewhere. Although it is nice getting duplicate items I love, I always enjoy trying new things. It is the main reason I love Subscription Boxes so much.
-0.35oz boscia B.B. Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 27 is worth $7.20. I always use the smallest size to price samples, because it is the cheapest buy-in. It just so happens the smallest size retails for $20.57 an ounce while the larger size retails for $21.71 an ounce. On that note, always remember to price items out before purchasing. The larger size is not always cheaper per ounce. This is another sample I’ve never received before, so I look forward to seeing if the general shade works with my skin color.
-0.5oz Peter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Defense Lotion Sunscreen Lotion is worth $12.35. This is a repeat to the sun safety kit, and I am a definite fan.
-0.17oz Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is worth $11.05. This is a frequent Sephora sample, and I definitely enjoy it. Now that I know how expensive this gem is, I will actively seek samples.
-0.23oz tarte TarteGuard 30 sunscreen lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30 is worth $6.90. This is a newer sunscreen to the market and one I’ve wanted to try. It is also featured in the Sephora Favorites Summer Crush set that I am considering getting, which would work out wonderfully if I love the sunscreen. The main reason I am thinking of getting the set is because it has a full-size Lancome Grandiose Mascara. I have a lot of mascara, so I know it is not smart to buy this kit with that being the most expensive item in the set.
-0.25oz Dr Dennis Gross dark spot sun defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen is worth $6.18. This is a repeat from the last kit, but Sephora also sent me a sample of this. Both of those samples expire this month, so I will be trying them very soon.
-0.25oz MDSolarSciences Mineral Creme Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is worth $4.41. I have a foil of this, but I have not tried it yet. If I like the foil, I will keep this deluxe size.
-0.2oz Dr. Jart+ Premium BB Beauty Balm Multi-Action Skincare + Make Up in Light-Medium is worth $5.20. This is another sample that was in the kit last year, but I have not tried it yet.
-0.07oz fresh Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment Sunscreen SPF 15 is worth $11.20. This is one of my favorite lip balms, and I love the subtle color of the rose tint. I carry one in my purse to apply on the fly, but this is sensitive to the heat. Do not leave this in the heat too long. If I will be out too long, I try to make sure this is kept somewhere cool.
-0.23oz Algenist Sublime Defense Anti-Aging Blurring Moisturizer SPF 30 is worth $8.63. This is a cream I’ve never received before, so I look forward to sampling it.
I calculate the total value (excluding the bag) at $116.76, which is lower than the $127 Sephora estimate. Sephora is usually very close to my estimate on value for Sephora Favorites Kits, as they were only off by a penny on the Give Me More Lip Kit. Some of the $10.24 discrepancy can be in the bag. It is a nice bag and could easily sell for that amount.
Like all Sephora Favorites Kits, the items are packaged extremely well. Between the $20 donation, the internal packaging, and the bag that comes with the set, I doubt Sephora makes any money with this.
This set was actually set with the items backwards, which made them even more secure than past sets. By placing them backwards, the open ends are placed against one another leaving the solid side pressed toward the bag.
It does this without sacrificing visibility. Whoever thought of this is a genius, although I doubt anything ever fell out of past sets where the open part faced the front. They are very secure.
Before 06/12/16, this was only available during the Fall Preview at the VIB Rouge event or from stores that mistakenly placed it out early. These sell-out quickly, so they will probably be gone within a week of being released. Get yours today!
