I love collecting the Julep birthstones, so I collect them all and not just my birthstone. December’s offering is a topaz blue. Birthstones are usually only available in the Secret Store from the 1st to the 3rd of the month. If you purchase during this period, you generally have to pay $11.20 (the Maven price). Julep extended its amazing YAYTODAY promo code for 50% off for two days past Cyber Monday. On the 2nd, I decided to see if the birthstone happened to release early to the main site. A search for the December birthstone showed it available and on sale for $9.99.
The birthstones rarely go on sale the month they’re released, so Julep was feeling very giving for Cyber week. Imagine my surprise when I typed YAYTODAY and saw that the code removed $5 from the $9.99 price. My deal senses told me to search sale polishes. There were two Calla and Lydia that were lovely and $4.99. Each of those removed 50% as well. Julep has given me a lot of incredible deals over the years, but picking three colors I want, one of which is brand new, for $9.99 is a first. They have sale polishes for $2 to $3 at times, but those are always older polishes.
It hit me after I placed the order that these items were in the Secret Store, and the code worked on them. I had not tried to add a discount code to Secret Store items in a very long time, but it never worked before. Every item I added from the Secret Store was combining with the YAYTODAY code, including the 12 piece set of every birthstone released this year. It is already selling for $98. In my cart with the discount code, it was reducing to $49. That is $4.08 a polish and a cute box! If I did not already own 11 colors, I would have considered it.
Someone pointed out that an email explained secret store items counted for the sale. I later saw the email and saw she was correct, but I still plan on testing codes with secret store items to see if they ever include them again.
My luck if I decided to pick up all birthstones at once next year is they would not release a set or release it and exclude it from discounts. Without discounts, each polish is $8.17. I averaged less than $6 per polish by purchasing them as I did in 2015, so the set would not be a deal for me without a discount. They have another set where you can get a box and pick your own 12 polishes. I would highly recommend this to anyone who does not have a large collection already. The box is super cute, and I really want it. This amazing code is no longer valid, but I keep a list of valid codes. Short of waiting until Cyber Monday next year, you will probably not see another code that good before placing your order.
The birthstone for December 2015 is Emily. She is a traditional blue topaz. Julep named all the birthstones this year after a celebrity, but there are no notes listed as to who this is named for. I am not going to venture a guess either. If I ever find out which lovely lady inspired this polish, I will come back and edit this. Compare this to my other blue polishes.
Calla is an aqua tropics iridescent glitter. My actual birthstone is March, so I am partial to aqua shades. This looked different from both aquamarine shades I already own for March 2014 and March 2015. It was a good call to get it, because she is different indeed. She is a little brighter than the others. I like collecting polishes with silver and gold tops, too. They just look fancy. Compare this to my other blue polishes.
Lydia is a pyrite stardust. I probably have a polish in my arsenal that is a perfect dupe, so I really did not need this. Once I embark upon my swatching project (starting soon), I will know. Whenever I see a polish with a family member’s name, I try to collect it. This shares a name with my husband’s Aunt. Compare this to my other gray and silver polishes.
Getting three polishes for $9.98 makes each about $3.33. My birthstone collection consists of January 2014-December 2015, so I have completed 2014 and 2015. When January releases, I will have to decide to get them as I go or wait to purchase them all on Cyber Monday in 2016. If you have not already taken a look, I highly suggest you do.

I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (12 and 7) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 12-year-old to apply it.
