Birchbox gives at least five beauty samples each month for $10. For every review I give, I get 10 points, which is equal to $1 in the shop. A five sample box like this one got me $5 back. I also shared my box on Facebook for an extra 10 points. That gave me a total of $6 back to redeem toward future purchases. You can read my detailed overview of the program for more information. Each month, you get a sample choice or you can select the guest editor box. For this box, I selected the Guest Editor.
This is the first of my two Birchbox Subscriptions. Box Two is different.
The Guest Editor box is always different from the main box. I am unsure if the editor has a hand in creating the box design, but this is my least favorite box since they switched from the boring brown ones.
The first thing you usually see when you open a Birchbox is a product card. It lists the items in the box and the price to purchase the full-size. Unless you choose to opt out for some reason, you will always get a sample choice. You can either select one item from a choice of 4-5 items or the guest editor box where you know all five in advance.
The back of the card usually goes over the box theme.
This month, the sample choice was between five items from the new Birchbox line of makeup, LOC: three Vibrant Matte Lipstick in First Kiss, Wildest Dreams, or Glam Life, and two Shadow Sticks in On Point or Impress Me. The guest editor box, GlamLifeGuru, included: Living Proof Perfect hair Day dry shampoo, Loc Tati One & Done Shadow Stick Day Trip, Shiseido Ultimune Eye Power Infusing Eye Concentrate, jouer essential lip enhancer Conditioning Lip Treatment, and Avene Hydrance Hydrating Serum.
The 1.8oz Living Proof Perfect hair Day dry shampoo is worth $9.90. I’ve wanted to try this specific dry shampoo for a while, because I’ve loved every Living Proof item I’ve ever tried. It was just too expensive to justify purchasing without sampling it first. When I saw the editor box included a sample of it, I knew this was the box for me. This sample alone makes the box worth it, so anything else I end up loving is an added bonus. I have not tried it yet, but even if I do not love it, I can finally cross it off my must try list.
The 0.18oz Shiseido Ultimune Eye Power Infusing Eye Concentrate is worth $23.40. That is impressive and probably the second highest valued sample I remember receiving right behind the Darphin from the Power Pose last month. Even if I do not love the sample, I appreciate the opportunity to try it. I’ve collected a few items from this specific Shiseido line, and I like the idea of trying them all together when the time comes.
The 0.05oz Loc Tati One & Done Shadow Stick in Day Trip is full-size. It retails for $10. This warm copper is beautiful. I would have preferred Nite Owl. That shade will pair wonderfully with the lipstick I selected (coming in my next box).
This was my first introduction to the new Birchbox makeup line Love of Color, LOC. Shadow sticks are generally not my thing, so I would have preferred a powder shadow (if they had one). It swatched beautifully. Two minutes after applying, I rubbed the swatch and it moved a bit. I’ve seen worse, but I’ve seen better. Cream shadows crease on me without fail unless I top with a powder, thereby changing the look of the cream shadow.
I wanted to try the shadow stick as close to full force as possible, but I needed powder to set it. This look is with MAC Mineralize Skin Finish on top. It is very slightly tinted, but it did not alter the color much. The shadow stick remained crease free many hours later, so I think I will set all shadow sticks with a translucent powder and not a powder eyeshadow. Birchbox did a great job with this. It was pigmented even though I am not overly fond of this specific color.
The 0.15oz jouer essential lip enhancer Conditioning Lip Treatment is worth $7.27. My lips are very dry, and I am always willing to try new lip treatment. Winter is right around the corner, so I will be increasing overall usage very soon. Hopefully, this is nice.
The 0.1oz Avene Hydrance Hydrating Serum is worth $3.56. I love trying new serums, and a hydrating serum for winter seems like a great one to sample. My Thermal Spring Water from this line is very refreshing, so this could be lovely.
The box has a $54.13 value. My personal value is also $54.13, because I will try everything. I had never heard or Tati or GlamLifeGuru before the spoilers for this box came, but I think this is one of the most promising guest editor boxes so far (other than Mad Men California, which had a lower value but was a five for five box).
