Birchbox Man gives at least four beauty samples a month $20. The price is double the Woman’s box, because of the added lifestyle item, which usually retails for over $20 by itself. As long as the lifestyle item is something you’d want, you should always get your investment back. You will get an email reminding you to select your lifestyle item. Respond as soon as you can, because the more desirable lifestyle items can go out-of-stock. All beauty samples are chosen based on the answers to your profile questions. For every review on an item received in your box, you get 10 points, which is equal to $1 in the shop. A five item box, like this one, usually gets my husband $5 back. He can also share his box on Facebook for an extra 10 points. That will usually give him a total of $6 back to redeem toward future purchases.
The Vaughn Shampoo was in a past box, so it did not allow him to submit another review for 10 points. I’ve received duplicate samples when I select a guest editor box that repeats something I’ve tried before, and I do not recall being restricted from earning an additional 10 points. He has never selected a guest editor box, so I am unsure how a sample even repeated other than his idea that the last time he sampled it was in foil form. Foils are extras, so he thinks it may not have officially counted toward his tally. That could be it or Birchbox Man does not have the same rules about no repeats, because there are far less samples to hand out all around. We’ll see.
The theme for this month is Stand For Something where Birchbox partnered with The Movember Foundation. Sport your mustache to raise awareness for men’s health initiatives. It came in the standard male box.
The first thing you notice when you open a box is the product card. It tells you what month the box is from and directs you to the website for a list of samples. Each card represents a specific month, and this month is all about standing more something with Movember. This list on your dashboard tells you what you received, how much it would cost to purchase the full size, and refers you to the product page if you want more information on it.
Even though one was a foil, there were five beauty samples this month. That is one more than last month.
The sample choice was between: Upstate Stock Navy Fingerless Wool Gloves, XY Find It Blue Tooth Tracker, and Harry’s Limited Edition Movember Truman Razor which included a voucher for four free cartridges. There was also a Birchbox Man + November featured box which included: the same razor above, Brothers Artisan Oil Shave Oil, DTRT Dear Matt Lotion, Proraso Shaving Cream, and Ursa Major 4-in-1 Essential Face Tonic. As cool as the razor looks, and I am partial to limited edition anything, I would have selected the Blue Tooth Finder. I’ve needed that more times than I care to admit, so I would love to have one.
My husband’s choice this month was the Harry Truman’s razor. It retails for $10. I’ve learned that picking the lowest value item on sample selection does not make sure you will receive higher value samples on your other items. Sometimes, it means your overall box value will be low. He said this was the only item that looked appealing to him and he’d rather have something he wanted worth less than something he did not worth more. That made sense. Once he tries this, I will report back on how it went. There was a card from Harry’s.com inside to give four free blades.
I usually do not add coupons or certain promo codes to box value, but the card giving four free blades at Harry’s.com has no catch. It really gave four free blades with no tax or shipping. Everything on the site ships free, which is impressive considering they sell some low-cost items. There was not even a place to enter a credit card number, because my total was zero. The four blades are already on the way. They retail for $8, which makes this card worth $8. It also makes the heads to this razor cheaper than drugstore. If he loved this razor, he would have no need to go back to drugstore ones.
After I placed the order for the blades, he tried the razor. While he loved the handle and how it gripped in his hand, he found the blades rough. They did not give him the close shave he usually gets. He was ready to write the razor off completely, but I asked him to try at least one of the replacement blades when they arrived to see if he got a blade that was a dud. Once he tries the new blade, I will report back. Harry’s also included a Daily Face Wash foil with the order.
The 1oz das boom industries Everywhere Lotion Denali is worth $3. He loves trying new lotions, but Juniper, Pine, and Cedar is probably too manly smelling for him. Neutral scents are more his speed.
The 1oz Billy Jealousy Ocean Front Body Wash is worth $2.25. He transitions back and forth between bar soap and liquid cleanser. This is his liquid cleanser phase, so he will probably try this soon.
The 0.03oz CLEAN Classic Eau de Toilette for Men is worth $1.14. He is very particular with his fragrances, and this is not one I think he will like. I hope he tries it though.
The 1oz V76 by Vaughn Hydrating Shampoo is worth $3. Shampoo is something he uses everyday, so this is always a great sample for him.
The 0.23oz V76 by Vaughn Well Groomed Ultralight Cream is a foil, so I do not place value on it. Foils get 10 review points and do not deduct from your deluxe samples, so it is nice to see them. I actually like when he gets hair products. He never sticks with the same hair product long, so he is always searching for a new one.
The box has a $27.43 value. His personal value may also be $27.43, because I hope he will try everything in the box. Anyone who does not redeem the four free blades will fall into unprecedented territory. The box value will be less than what he paid. This box has a lower value than last month’s, which he was not overly thrilled with. He may not love this one either. I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (12 and 7) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 12-year-old to apply it.
