Birchbox gives at least five beauty samples each month for $10. For every review I give, I get 10 points, which is equal to $1 in the shop. A five sample box like this one gets me $5 back. I also shared my box on Facebook for an extra 10 points. That will give me a total of $6 back to redeem toward future purchases. You can read my detailed overview of the program for more information. Each month, you get a sample choice or you can select the guest editor box. For this box, I selected the Guest Editor Box for Mad Men California.
This is the first of my three Birchbox Subscriptions. Box Two will post later today, and Box Three will post tomorrow.
I really like the design of the box this month. All of the designs lately have been a lot of fun.
The first thing you notice when you open a box is the product card. It gives you a brief description of the products as well as the cost to purchase the full size. Unless you choose to opt out for some reason, you will always get a sample choice. You can either select one item from a choice of 3-4 items or the guest editor box where you know all five in advance.
This month, the sample choice was between three items: a Jane Iredale lip/cheek combo, a Jouer blush, or a Pop Beauty eyeshadow trio. They all looked lovely, and I would not mind any of them. The guest editor box, Mad Men, created two boxes: New York or California. Both boxes looked amazing. I wanted all five items in the box I selected. Rarely will you see a guest editor box where all five items are things you would have selected for yourself. April was the first month I had my second and third boxes, so I did not get a choice on those.
The 0.75oz Whish Shave Crave Shaving Cream in Blueberry is worth $3. I love the close shave I get with this product and like having minis to take with me when I travel. A little of this shave cream goes a long way, so this mini will get me through a trip. This scent is one of the nicer ones in the line, too.
The 1.6oz Liz Earle Eyebright is worth $8. I love the concept of this. Even my beloved BiFacil at times leaves a little eye makeup behind that I cannot see until the morning. A swipe of this takes it right off. Before I owned this, I used to do another swipe of BiFacil but that only removes the makeup. This also cools and assists in de-puffing. It suggests keeping it on your eyes for 5-10 minutes for full effect, but I have never used it that long. Even when I swiftly swipe this over my eyes, I notice a slight difference. It is a very nice product, and the cooling sensation feels lovely on tired eyes.
The 0.11oz Cargo Swimmables Water Resistant Blush in Los Cabos is worth $7.73. This soft tangerine color is so beautiful. Trying a blush that is water-resistant interested me. Blushes usually fade quickly on my skin. My cheeks are dry, so the color has nothing to latch onto and falls off fast. While it did last longer than my usual blush, I find it hard to believe it would hold up in water when it fades from my face in a few hours.
On hot days like this one, it is hard to tell where my color ends and the blush begins. My coloring is pink and the blush is orange, so the orange is the blush.
I wore it again with a little more makeup this time. Paired with Too Faced Beach Bunny, which is an orange bronzer, I was able to pull off an orange glow.
The 0.085oz Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel is worth $6.68. This is something I regularly use, so having a mini is awesome. Of all the brow gels I’ve tried, it is my favorite. It holds my brows down without making them crusty.
The Beauty Protector Protect & Oil does not list a size, so I am guessing the size at 0.25oz. It is very unusual to receive an item without a size somewhere on it (at least in women’s boxes). If my guess is correct, this sample is worth $1.62. My current hair oil is almost gone, so I will try this soon. OCD usually prevents me from having too many of the same type of item open at once. Plus, the expiration countdown starts once you open it.
The box has a $27.03 value. My personal value is also $27.03, because I love all the samples. Finding five items I loved in one box puts this in hall of fame territory. Love is a strong word that I do not use lightly.

I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (12 and 7) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 12-year-old to apply it.
