Everyone knows how much I love Birchbox. What’s not to love when you get surprises each month! Most months, I get at least three samples I look forward to trying. It also seems like the boxes are constantly getting better, so there are months where I get excited for four or more items. My mother-in-law always gets me thoughtful gifts. For her birthday, I thought she would probably enjoy trying new things. So, I pulled the trigger on a three-month gift subscription. The cost is $30, but of course that is not what I paid.
I used points to pay for $14 of her box making my cost $16. My fellow Birchbox subscribers are probably wondering how I redeemed $14 when you can only redeem in multiples of $10. The answer is quite simply that I also bought my husband a $6 bar of soap at the same time, and his soap (as I promised him) was free. Thus, I redeemed $20 in points, got a $6 soap for my husband and the two free samples added to a $35+ order for myself. It is hard for me to accumulate points, because I love to shop with them.
Birchbox releases frequent bonus point codes. When I ordered this on 01/23/15, I used code BBSTORE100 (which expired, but they do recycle codes) for a 100 point bonus with a subscription. You cannot count points toward the discount as you earn and redeem, so I will only count them as I redeem them. That means the $10 I get back on this order will be used on a future order just as the $14 I applied on this order was earned on past orders.
Her first box arrived a bit before her birthday. It looked like an awesome box. I had wanted to try that Beauty Protector Leave in Conditioner for a long time, so I thought it was quite awesome she got it in her very first box. Sunscreen is always a favorite of mine, because I burn so easily. Coola has a great line of sunscreens so that is another win. The Cynthia Rowley gloss is in a pretty color and looks different from the one I already own.
Gilchrist and Soames body lotion is decent. I’ve tried this at a hotel I stayed at, but that was a thinner formula. The smell is also pleasant. When it comes to perfumes, I am rarely overly excited to see them. They are low value items (because of the size), and I am not much of a perfume wearer. I do like trying different ones, but I have never even finished a sample vial in my life. Catherine Malandrino perfume actually came spilled in a later box for me, and the scent was overpowering. Although, I doubt you’re meant to spray the entire tube on yourself the way it opened inside the box.
That means four of her five items look exciting to me. Some may wonder why I am offering my opinion on her items instead of getting her own. The reason is I did not want the gifts burden her, so I did not want to have her tell me what she thought of each one. On that note, I also refrained from asking her for the size of the items. Anyone who reads my personal box reviews knows I break down the value of the samples, and I will still do that for my boxes. After she showed me her box, I knew that I wanted to order Birchbox subscriptions for all of my sisters and Moms this year. It will be fun to see the different welcome boxes. Plus, I really hope everyone finds some new items to love.
The welcome boxes usually do not take the beauty profiles into account, so I also did not feel it was necessary to ask my gift recipients a bunch of questions to see why they got the welcome box they did. I am not sharing any of their boxes that take their profile into account. Again, this is to let them enjoy their gifts without me bothering them. My boxes are pretty good, so I have not touched my settings in a while. I will be more than happy to share my settings on my box for people who want to tinker with theirs.
I answer more questions regarding the program if you want more details on how it works. You can review other welcome boxes I’ve sent and received this year. Ready to send a Gift Subscription? I'm Kimberly. Shopping is always more fun when I've found the best deal available, so I am always on the hunt. My father instilled that in me, and I love that I carry a piece of him. Sometimes, my husband and sons (12 and 7) let me shop for them, too. They do not use as many beauty products as I do. We can all benefit from nice products, even though their routine ends with moisturizer. That is when I can convince my 12-year-old to apply it.
